I can just see one of us show beaglers standing up in front of a group of field beaglers and trying to talk conformation. Why do you think we should lecture them in the first place? Why is it always "Us against them" with some of you people?

I have been reading your boards for a while and have for the most part enjoyed them. Since my dogs have been mentioned and this one post seemed directed at me I thought I might respond.

I have to always wonder when I see posts like this why it must be "Them against us" I have personally attended a field trial and I thoroughly enjoyed it, the people, dogs and atmosphere. I would never attempt to discuss the conformation of dogs at a field trial as its not my place to do so, Should someone ask me for my opinion of a dog and if it was of good enough conformation to show in a AKC event then I'd be happy to give my opinion because it is within my area of expertise. Can my dogs last in the hunt? I don't know. We don't have gundog clubs in Utah. I've looked. Are my dogs muscular and built for running in the field? I'd have to say yes they are and if given the chance I'm sure they could run a rabbit but, I'm sure they wouldn't run it correctly or with the vigor of some hunting bred dogs. I hear time and time again on this board when someone posts a picture of a show bred looking hound that "thats too pretty to run a rabbit" I find that a little presumptuous since a few hunters on here are doing quite well with hounds who look more show bred. I would hope that if anyone wanted help from show breeders that they would ask. I am usually happy to offer an opinion if asked. I would also hope that show breeders who have the opportunity get to some field trials. Its definitely an awesome thing to witness. Most of all I hope that everyone can respect each other.

Thanks for the opportunity to post my thoughts.

Honey Pot, can you honestly say there isn't a little (or a lot) of "us aganst them" with "you people" ( as you said) as well? There are some field breeders that don't care about a beagle's conformation as long as they run a rabbit, but, I've found this to be the exception, not the rule. Most responsible field breeders DO care what their hound looks like, and strive for better structure, but a beagle's performance in the field is most important to us. It's easy for us to test proper running gear etc., because these hounds are hunted hard, if they cannot hold up in the field they will not be used for breeding, it's as simple as that. I think most of us are just a little suprised that show breeder/owners don't use their dogs for what they were intended for and what they love more than anything. I can't imagine owning a beagle and not letting them run rabbits, it's what they live for! But, to each his own I guess. I do respect your posts, they are very informative and your hounds are absolutely beautiful. I agree that field and show breeders could learn alot from each other, but right now there is such a deep chasm between the two. Hopefully, in the future both sides will be able to work together to create beagles that can do it all!! -Stacy

Hey Stacy,
I believe that I picked two of your Beagles when I had the honour of judging the Tris last summer. You have very nice hounds.
I can't talk for the rest of the show beaglers but I myself absolutely do not look down on field Beaglers that have nice, well cared for dogs..and that goes for the show folk too. I TRY to see each person I meet as an individual...not as a member of a certain race, religion, political party or particular :P Beagle sport ;)
I'd LOVE to let my hounds run a rabbitt in a safe environment and one where I felt comfortable too. I'd LOVE to see it! My dogs do run squirrels out in my fenced section of woods and they LOVE that! :D

Thanks Honey Pot! I'm sure watching them chase squirrels is a sight too! I guess we should just remember that we all share a common love for this breed, whether they are hard hunting gun dogs, or gorgeous show dogs. I must say that I love to watch the dog shows when they're on TV, and my kids and I are always (maybe a little biased here LOL) pulling for the beagles!! I'll bet the shows are a real event, I'd love to go to one someday! Good luck with you and your hounds!! -Stacy

No there isn't!!!! That is a misconception that seems to feed on its self.
I hear this same thing on all the Lab boards where I am on the other side of the fence than I am on here, and the reality is the same here as it is there. If we were not all fond of the breed, we wouldn't be here, and would probablly have a St Benard.

I have to agree with Tom and Stacy. What holds us together or should hold us together is the love of the breed. We don't always have to agree but, I can sure admire a beautiful hunting hound in excellent condition doing its job. The sound of them too ;-) I don't really know of many show people who dislike the hunting dogs. They do look different in some ways (some of them) but, in the contests you've had on these boards I saw some that I thought were lovely and NO they didn't all look like show dogs.

Honeypot & Windkist,
Just send me some of those pretty beagle and as being retired, I'm sure they would like to go run rabbits with me. When we where in horses it was the same way. The show horses were called leadim and feedim and the competion horses were called rideim and slidim. Well I did both and I do it in hounds also. So just send me some and I'll rideim and slidim.
To old to cut the mustard, you can always run beagles
