Dog riped pad today Help.

My gyp Ruby riped her pad while hunting today. She hunted on it for about 3 hrs. before I cought it. I put some sav on it when I got her back to the truck. I aslo put some on when I got her home. What do I need to do at his point other than rest and the sav once a day?

Foot needs to be throughly cleaned and disinfected. It needs to be kept clean and dry for 10 days. If the cut is open, glue it together with crazy glue. Hold cut together until skin bonds, watch out for human fingers, makes a funny looking beagle. May need to bandage to keep it together. Is dog in house or outside? They like to chew bandages off. Also licking keeps the area moist which encourages bacterial growth. You may need an elizabethan collar (cone head) to stop licking. Don't use too much ointment- again, keeps area too moist and you want it dry. Carolyn

I moved her from her above ground kennel to my Concrete one. I can't glue it together there is a chunk missing. The sav keeps her from licking it, for the most part. I have cleaned it out with wather but that is it. I realy hate to take peroxide to it but if I need to then it will be done.

don't know why you would hate to take peroxide to it......it's not that bad! Get you some cephalexin antibiotics. It helps heal sores on dogs real quick. You can order it without a perscription. . Do a search for Fish Flex. It's cephalexin for aquariums but it is the same exact thing....250mg. Also tractor supply sells Scarlex spray. It's a germicidal, antiseptic, fungicidal all in one. Works real well.

Carolyn has given good advise. The pad needs to stay dry. Salve is only going to keep the germs IN and not let the air circulate. You really should clean it out with an antiseptic (not peroxide) or saline solution (salt water)at least twice a day. Wrapping it may help to keep dirt and germs out and also make it a bit more comfortable for her walking until it toughens up a bit, but again, like Carolyn said, they do tend to rip a wrap off. I have found that Co-flex or self-adhesive gauze works pretty good.
Make sure to check it often for any signs of infection.

new skin is a good product it has antibacterial stuff in it heals it up quick.

If there is a hunk missing, spray with liquid bandage. Be careful though, that stuff does sting. Peroxide should only be used as an initial cleaner. After that it interrupts the healing of the skin and slows down the process. Use an antiseptic or saline. An epsom salt soak might help but must dry afterwards. Dry is most important. Carolyn

we had a dog to get its pads cut awhile back a good friend of ours told us about the EMT GEL THAT BASS PRO and CABELLAS carries we put it on they wont lick it or bite at it as it has a bitter formula in it to stop this wrked great and all is well in 10 days hope this helps

I agree with Mark, EMT is the way to go. I carry a tube in my truck all the time and one at home. It's like a super glue and adheres to the foot. Read the article about it and the bird dog trainer, great stuff. You can buy at TSC.
