Pretty Sad...

Post by Ohiohntr »

Sorry, I have to vent somewhere.....this falls in line with Abshires post about throwin hay

I talked to my neice who just turned 16 this Tuesday....asked her if she was going to go take the class to get her licence and she said, "no, mom and dad aint got the funds to send me through driving school"....so me being a nice uncle says, "hey, I have some landscaping needin done around the house....I will pick you up at 5am on Wednesday and Thursday (2hr roundtrip drive for me)...you landscape the house with me buying everything and telling ya what needs done and I will pay the $300 for driving school". Now, we are talkin 16 lazy hours at the most here...some weed pullin...sprayin roundup....layin 30 bags of mulch....spreadin some stone around with a rake....and plantin about 10 flowers....and spray down the kennels if there is time.

She laughs and says..."that is hard work and way too early in the morning, I am not going to do that...and I certainly am not going to spray dog poop"....her mom is flippin out at this point. I say, "are you sure"....she says, "I will do it but somebody has to help me and don't have to touch the kennels"....I say, "If I have to babysit ya and if you are going to pick your jobs, I will do it myself with my 7 and 9 year olds and save my money"....she humm halls around and finally I say, "nevermind, it ain't worth the hassle or the drama".

Now keep in mind when I was 15 I shoveled horse crap at a slaughter house, yes horse, and worked for $4 an hour doing that to get through driving school and buy a 86 Chitvette and 78 Chitvette (both wrecked) and matched them together to make a drivable first car.

I am just dumbfounded....wife, girls (paid them $1 each to buy slushies at campgrounds this weekend), and I got 90% of it done in less than 5hrs tonight...I would have been paying my neice around $25 and hour and she just couldn't handle it......what gives

Keep this in mind too....with the $$ we would normally give her for her B-day plus grandparents and such....she would have enough to pay the $300....but, instead she is buying some Geo-Cashe BS tool....so I say, "how the heck ya going to get to the locations, walk?"

It is sad in some cases! I have my 8 and 6 year old help out for all they get! If I don't install some work ethic in them the world sure as heck won't!
The "world" enables a bunch of not working folks who honestly don't deserve to eat, if you ask me. When I leave for work in the morning I get a call when
my 8 year old daughter gets up and she asks "Am I feeding the puppies today?" No, she is not a perfect child, but does have enough initiative to do as myself and
her mother ask, as well as my 6 year old son. It is a shame by that age (16) they should already have that drive to earn there stuff! She'd be walking if she was mine!

It bothers me that this is titled "younger generation :angryfire: " I am a teacher and I can't tell you how many older lazy bum parents that come into my classroom and see so many people abusing welfare, food stamps and unemployment. Not to mention social security fraud, disability and countless others. THese are adults doing this and if we want kids to grow up right then we need to be the ones teaching them...

I know plenty hard working 10yr olds too....

I disagree totally. Pretty shity parenting is what I blame it on. My kids are hard workers when i ask them to be and it is free. Sounds to me like you all gave to many time outs and not enough whippen because you love them. ( spare the rod spoil the child) it is written in red. You are only as good as the people who teach you! :) :bash:

I can't believe I am typing this.......Hubert I agree with you.......

I remember when most kids were out of school in the summers ridin 4 wheelers, swimming, and stuff, I was standin on a hillside in my baseball cleats mowing weeds and fighting off copperheads and yellow jackets, washing cars for neighbors, mowing lawns, or cleaning out dads horse barn stalls. Mom and dad gave me a lot of stuff growin up, but they made me work for it, so I would appreciate it later in life.......I wouldn't go back and change a thing, I probably deserved more beatings than I really got.

TC= that doesn't sound spoiled to me... just good parenting...

Spoiled to me is when you expect things for nothing at all from everyone or think people owe you just because you are breathing....

I agree with ya Blair and Hubert, gots to write that down somewhere......I would like to beat her 16yo BLEAP!!! I had a feeling this would come out in the wash someday, could see the writin on the wall many years ago.

Funny, the teen sees my facebook post about finishing up landscaping and sends me a message wondering if I was doing "her job"....I email back and say "yep, found a better deal...my girls did it for small slushies and I pocketed the other $298".

And, I changed the post as to not paint with a broad brush....I too know a few, very few, high school kids who want to work. But, But....out of the 10 college/highschool students I hired last year here at work to do landscaping/roofing.....the supervisors only wanted ONE of them back this year, said the others were worthless, and they were....In fact we didn't hire any summer help this year because it was more work babysitting than it is worth.....these "kids" were being paid $10/hr for their efforts. Tells me it ain't just happening close to home....frustrating. :bomb:

The number 1 rule too live by when parenting a child.Get em up outta bed everyday.Kids that stay up all night on the phone ,games or computers, are generally not worth a dime. They wanna sleep all day.Rule 2 work never hurt or killed a child, even mommas precious baby.Nothing wrong with chores.I aint saying send a 9 year off too cut trees down but teach em something besides a playstation 3 and a text message.Lots of sorry kids have sorry parents.JMHO.Will not be accepted in the valley, I got em from 5 to 18.Believe it.

It does boil down to parenting and none of us our experts, but the good lord expects our best effort on there behalf and we will answer for that someday. That really scares me into
doing the best I can and should all others as well. Not scared in a bad way, but a respectful way. I tell my kids as they go to school each day, work on small jobs, and play sports that your mentality should be "OVER MY DEAD BODY WILL ANYONE BE BETTER AT WHAT I DO". Just asking them to do there best and that will always be sufficient as to work and all other
activites. You CAN NOT start to early instilling work ethic and always putting forth your best effort, that is a very important part of life. This world ain't going to give you NOTHING, but a swift kick in the butt everytime it can!!
