Need Help Doc or Anyone

Post by J.C. Blair »

I have a pup that i got about 2 weeks ago. He was healthy when I got him and i think has been a little stressed about the change in his new enviroment. I first noticed him having diarrhea and then it had a little blood in it, so I took him to the vet last monday. He checked out negative for parvo-virus and negative on worm, hooks, rounds etc. Then we narrowed it down to Coccidiosis, the vet gave me Albon and a supplement to try and stimulate his eating habit. He has been on the medication for about a week now and I thought he was getting better but now seems he is getting back to the way he was last week. I did not switch dog foods or anything and I have tried mixing canned food with it also to try and get him to eat better. I dont know what else to do, I am gonna take him back to the vet tomorrow for sure, but would like to hear anyones input. Thanks in advance.

If his immune system is down, then after you finish the med for the cocci... if you haven't cleaned out the kennel he can get it again. I have read somewhere that boiling hot water will kill this germ. Would also use some bleach and antibacterial soap since this germ is bacteria. Also, when you feed the pup make sure you use a clean dish everytime just in case some of the germs got in there. Wash it good with antibacterial soap. Once the pups immune system gets up to par then it should be able to fight this off on his own. Get some more Albon from the vet. After you do all this then the pup should be alot better. Better still move it to a different kennel that you have disinfected already.
Good luck and keep us informed.

Oakhill,
Thanks for the response. I just got back from the vet earlier, they gave some stuff called Flagyl, to help kill the bacteria, she said it looked like a protozoa type bacteria. They also gave him some fluids to help him also. I had cleaned out the pen he was in with bleach, but must not of got it all. I come back and bleached the dog house, flooring, water bucket, feed bowl, etc. Keep your fingers crossed. Thanks

You didn't mention how old the pup was? Has he maintained his weight between the two visits? Flagyl would be a very good "next step" on this pup. It tends to promote a healthy gut microflora, kills Giardia, and actually has some direct anti-inflammatory properties on the gut. Sounds as if your veterinarian is doing a great job!

Hey Doc,
The pup is around 9 weeks old. Yes, he maintained his weight between visits, weighed the same on both visits. However, I think if I hadnt of taken action when I did, it could of got worse. On top of the Flagyl, they gave him some meds with I.V. and this evening, he seemed to feel better and his stool didnt look runny, with spotty blood, starting to look normal again. Hopefully we'll get the little guy straightened out. The people at the Vet office I take him to have been very helpful and they seem to really know what they are doing. Once again thanks.

UKC runner,
My vet gave me the same stuff probably, its a canned food made by science diet and it seems to help him some. His stool looks a lot better and he acts a little better but still a little sluggish, still putting the medication to him hoping we'll get him cleared up.

Hi Chad,
Fought this on some pups and what I feel helped was after bleaching the pen/pans & box, I put "oil dry" in the box. The weather being so damp, the box was always wet/damp inside also. I put the "oil dry"(looks like very small crumbled pieces of clay) in the box and it kept it nice and dry(easy to clean out and replace). After doing this and completeing their 2nd round of treatment, they stayed well. I think the damp box was why it kept returning...jmho...Patch
