EXTREME STAMINA??

Post by kwolf »

Is there a kennel that breeds for extreme stamina in dogs. I can hunt my dogs 2 days in a row but they are spent by the end of 2nd day. Now I am talking 6 to 8 hours each day with pounding running at 18 to 22 miles on garmin on cottontails. I had 2 females 10-12 years ago that were dingus & reffets sampson bred that I could hunt 3 days in a row all day and they were still hunting hard on the 3rd day at the end of the day, now that is impressive to me . My other dogs dreaded to hear them open up the afternoon of the 3rd day. These females were not as fast as what I run today but they would keep up with whatever the pace was and by the end of most days they would be setting the pace if you know what I mean. Anyone breed for this kind of stamina ? Thanks ahead for imput Ron Preston

I would think it's more a matter of conditioning than breeding, but I could be wrong.

It's more a matter of "desire" (grit) over " breeding", IMO. A fat hound with desire will outwork a thin hound that is a quitter.

Desire is indeed bred into them.....

I have a few that can handle what you ask for...they aren't windsplitters but they sure will run all day and be ready to go the next.

I look for this specifically in pups. Have two here now that handled 12-14 mile days before they were 8 months.....some have it...you have to go thru many of ANY line to find the highest quality...JMO.

You can have a bunch of dogs from various bloodlines.
Condition all of them the same way.
Certain dogs and or lines will have more stamina than others.

The meachum, southwoods, birch lake dogs seem to be in a league of their own.

Dogs are like humans, we can walk across the USA but running 26 miles in a Marathon will wipe us out no matter how much we have prepared for it.
Used to run the fast pack for one full day, then put down the slower dogs and run them the other 3 days during Thanksgiving holiday.

Chapkos beagles breeds for a complete hound from jump, checking ability, nose, speed, drive and extream stamina in all conditions from hot to cold. If they dont hunt, run, and kill like a wolf he dont breed them

No disrespect but the 3 we've had, desire grit hunt what ever you wanna call it they lacked the most. I'm sure yours don't or you wouldn't own them. Just didn't work out for me.

There is plenty of JUNK in all lines!!!!

Got be very selective, put them in the brush every opportunity you have and EXPOSE them to the situations you expect them to perform in.

Then cull from there.....they don't have it and they have to leave....harsh part of getting a quality group who each individual can do it all on a regular basis.
Always be critical, you won't raise the bar if you are not.

Good luck!

With no disrespect....but the best hounds you have seen may not really even be in the same area with you....not the ones in the holler down the road or ole John's dogs out the way....you really really have to see it to be clear if you want it or not.

getting humbled by hounds better than yours can vastly change your opinion of "top" quality.

Randy, this reminds me of when Carl Sizemore had ole Bob Patch. He hunted with a feller over around Hamilton name Turner. Well, Mr. Turner and his bronko hounds hated ole Bob cause they couldn't run him out. Every day ole Bob would be standing on the gate waiting to go and Mr. Turner would be dragging his out of the box.
Someone stole a mighty fine hound when they took ole Bob patch.
We run him up at Park Falls for a week on hare and he was passing blood and come home a bag of bones but he never knew the word quit. You'd have a lot of fun listening to Carl talk about that hound.
I had a little inbred hound named Sugar by Casey and his sister Aunt Sib. I took and bred her to Mr. Horn and got the three pup litter Bob was out of.

I'd recommend going to some of these fellers that go run hare with their hound. Nothing test the stamina of hounds more than an all week hare race. imho
