Sire or Dam?

Post by Casey Harner »

For beaglers who believe most traits come from the parents, which parent throws the most traits??

I hear more about mother's throwing more traits, but it seems the males get the blame for not producing a good pup. So what do you think??

Never understood why people asked this. The pups are 50% from the sire and 50% from the dam.

I have bred many thru the years and its a 50 -50 shot. can see both traits in the pups . now just as people some will resemble dad more some mom . that's just how it goes.

Yes the DNA is split 50/50....so in common terms each parents genes (traits) are equally available..The rate at which genes are expressed and how they are expressed is determined by which genes are dominate and ressessive which is what is observed in the physical characteristics in offspring. Putting a percentage number on this is inaccurate to say the least. JMO tho

I've only done one breeding, but I see traits of both, not necessarily in the same pup. I have a female that resembles the sire in markings and others that resemble the dam. I bred to an oversized male and the pups are right at 15" except one male who is over. I enjoy these topics as I learn from others with more experience.
