NIGHT RUNNING VS DAY RUNNING
THE NIGHT RUNNING FOR THE LAST MONTH HAS BEEN AWSOME , RABBITS SEEM TO STAY OUT LONGER AND THE DOGS ARE JUST SMOKING THEM . I HAVE BEEN PUTTING 12 TO 14 MILES A NIGHT A COUPLE NIGHTS A WEEK , THE GARMIN MAKES IT A LOT MORE INTERESTING TOO. RAN 14 MILES LAST NIGHT (SATURDAY NIGHT) AFTER RUNNING 12 MILES THURSDAY NIGHT. START TO FINISH THEY JUST SMOKED. NO DOWN TIME AT NIGHT , WHEN THEY PUT ONE IN THE GROUND ANOTHER RACE IN JUST A LITTLE WHILE, WE ARE RUNNING 7 TO 8 HOUNDS AT A TIME AND EVERY DOG SEEMS TO BE GETTING THEIR SHARE DONE. HOPE EVERYONE IS ENJOYING THEIR CHASES LIKE WE ARE. RON PRESTON
Re: NIGHT RUNNING VS DAY RUNNING
I run mine at night thru the summer months but now because its getting alot cooler at night Ive switched to daytime. I don't know how may miles I put on my dogs but they ran 5 hours today. Just flat out smoked the rabbits. I seen at least 7 and the dogs caught one. Some people say night running gives dogs bad habits but if you mix a little day timing in the middle they'll be fine. At least mine has been so far. I say run them when you can. That's what makes the good ones better!

Re: NIGHT RUNNING VS DAY RUNNING
I prefer day running to night running because I like to see as well as hear what is happening. Also, down here in the unbelievable briar patches and thicks the dogs do not run as fast at night as they do in the day light. I agree that a mix is good. All that being said,if you want to run beagles, hold down a job, serve the Lord, and take care of your family, you have to go when you can. We prefer daylight but probably run as much at night. ROWCO

Re: NIGHT RUNNING VS DAY RUNNING
i typically get off work at 3 and try to get home and do what i have to in the evenings and bust out around 6 to run. when darkness falls it seems like the runners come out then. last night we jumped a rabbit within 2 feet of where we parked and the dogs took it out 720 yards and circled it three times on the adjacent hillside before burning his butt right past the truck within feet and across the road to a hole. we dont get runs like that in daylight hours so to me, two or three good runs in the evenings like that get my dogs in shape twice as fast as a full day grubbing up rabbits for short circles in daylight hours. ill take what i can get. im lucky to get out 2-3 times a week and if im lucky a morning run on the weekends. so the evenings are the best time for me to get good running in.

Re: NIGHT RUNNING VS DAY RUNNING
ive never ran my dogs at night. just wondering if there was any reason for this or u just don't have time in the daylight
Re: NIGHT RUNNING VS DAY RUNNING
I LOVE TO RUN AT NIGHT , DURING THE DAY YOU MAY GO 45 MINUTES TO A HOUR BETWEEN RACES , BUT AT NIGHT IT IS SOLID RUNNING FROM THE TIME YOU DROP DOWN UNTIL YOU CATCH THEM. YOU BETTER HAVE GOOD STRAIGHT HOUNDS WHEN RUNNING AT NIGHT BECAUSE ALL THE WILD LIFE ARE OUT AND ABOUT. I HUNTED ABOUT 7 HOURS FRIDAY AND ABOUT 7 HOURS SUNDAY PUTTING 14 TO 15 MILES ON THEM BOTH DAYS WHERE IT ONLY TAKES 4 TO 5 HOURS TO PUT THAT MANY MILES ON THEM AT NIGHT.
Re: NIGHT RUNNING VS DAY RUNNING
Some animals are nocturnal ( most active durring the night). Some are diurnal ( most active during the day).
Rabbits are Crepuscular which means they are most active at dawn and dusk .

Re: NIGHT RUNNING VS DAY RUNNING
Love running at night mostly is because it is the only time I have to run and am an old coon hunter love pickin out the mouths. The running seems to be much better at night to me. I also run during the day and in and out of a pen. Feed them tracks and a houndsman will know what his dog needs wether it is more night or day running JMO. Give them what they need and have fun and what works for you is what you should do !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kwolf said it best when he said everything is out and about at nite including rabbits i do run at nite on occasion but i prefer early mornin into mid evenin i think a dog that has been run at nite alot will run around lookin for a sent trial which means the rabbit is already up instead of gettin into a big old nasty briar thicket and jumpin the rabbit straight out of the sitting position thats why it is one race after another is because they r out runnin around and feedin and the dog is just finding another track instead of jumping the rabbit i want mine to hunt the nasty stuff not run around loookin for a track dont want to offend anyone jmo run them how u like

Re: NIGHT RUNNING VS DAY RUNNING
I started running beagles back in the mid 60's with a friend of my Dad.I was around 13-14 years old and Al would come pick me up and we'd go up to the Worcester,Ma. airport and turn his dogs loose at night. We'd sit on the hood of his 62 Bel-Air and eat donuts and drink coffee and listen to em pound.
I then kept coonhounds for 21 years and night hunting and being in the woods at night with the dogs and listening to what was going on in a race without seeing it was where it was at.I've hunted with some beaglers that don't hardly pay attention to what's going on in the race.I want to first listen to the race as that's when the hounds are telling me what's up.
In New Hampshire my buddy Bob and I used to run at the club grounds at night as we worked during the week.Plus at night we 'd usually have the grounds all to ourselves.
Here in Tn. I run my beagles a lot at night from June 1-Sept 1 just because of the heat.
All that being said I guess I've been running hounds at night for about 50 years and without a doubt you will have some of your absolute best ever running!
As has been mentioned most all the wildlife is more active at night [except the birds and squirells ].That means all the trash too! Better have a straight dog or you could be in for a long night.
Scenting is also usually better, especially after the dew falls. Most times it seems the wind dies and the woods are quieter.
People are always saying that running at night makes a dog lazy as a hunter as the tracks come too easy??????????? So??????????
I run beagles to hear the race------ I'll take the easy tracks, the hard tracks, the daytime tracks, the night time tracks, the cold tracks, the jump tracks, the hare tracks, cottontail tracks, swamper tracks, summertime dusty tracks, powder snow tracks, heck I might even take the railroad tracks!
I hunt and run enough days when it doesn't come easy so don't mind a bit to turn out after dark and have them blister one .
If you've never had the experience it's something to turn out half a dozen beagles in the north country on a hare after dark. It's like a fox chase.Sit around a campfire on the edge of a cedar swamp and if you've got the right dogs keep that same hare going for hours.I find even the cottontails will run bigger and longer at night.now the swampers and night running i don't know about. The places where I've hunted swampers I don't want to be in after dark.LOL.
If your beagle won't hunt good for you during the day like he does at night maybe you need to check his pedigree------------something might be wrong ?
There's an old pioneer saying "It's a sorry dog that wants game but won't hunt for it".

Re: NIGHT RUNNING VS DAY RUNNING
Sure the running is better at night anybody can find a rabbit at night not knocking it I do it to but if you want to see what kind of dog you got take em out at mid day and make em really have to look for a rabbit and then ask the same question.
