Is it legal ??

My dad called Ohio dept. of Nat. Res.(ODNR) and asked if he would be legal to carry a gun (410 with slugs) for coyotes while running his beagles a couple years back and they said it was OK. He called this year and someone said he could not carry a gun while pursuing another game??? Does anybody no if there is any truth to this .Also told that we had to have current hunting licence to run our dogs in the off season(training) one year and was told by another person we called at ODNR we didnt have to have licence to train our dogs.

You need your license in West Virginia to run your dogs in the off season.

I talked to our game warden about carrying my 410 pistol with buckshot while I was running rabbits during the off season. He said if I ask you what you are out here doing you better tell me you are coyote hunting, not running rabbits. He said I could hunt coyotes 365 days a year, 24/7, but rabbits have a season and I would give you a ticket for carrying a gun for hunting out of season. He also said if I had a gun I needed a license, no gun no license needed.

Same here. A game warden came up to me while I was running dogs a few years back and ask for my hunting license and I told him I was not hunting and he said training dogs is still considered hunting and you need your license to run them but I had my license with me but I just wanted to see what he said.

Training dogs, in season or out, with or without a gun, requires a Hunting License in the State of Arkansas. Running domesticated bunnys in a starter pen is the exception.

In view of the contridictory information furnished to some runners, it would be best to buy a license. I would bet a Game Warden will not issue a ticket for having a license.

In Michigan, if you have a CPL you can carry a gun any time but you must tell the CO you have a CPL if he asks. You also do not need a hunting license to train your dogs and, you may still carry the gun if you have the CPL. I have this in writing from the director. I often carry a .22 and a .40 caliber. Just like to be armed. I never have a license because I don't kill anything. I have shown my weapons to a couple CO's without problem. As for the coyotes, if they get close enough, I will feel threatened (for the record) and defend myself by throwing some lead at them.

Yes you have to have a small game license to pursue game with dogs.
* don't need a small game license on your own property
* don't need one in an enclosure.
* enclosure has to have a permit.

Yes, you actually have to have a small game license when running in a dog trial on the outside.
You have to also wear one article of "orange" if it is rabbit season during the trial.
(how many of us do this??)

Sorry Lone Pine: I am not confused. You do not have to have a license to pursue small game in Michigan. By "pursue", I am talking about just running your dogs in season or out. Of that I am sure. You do have to have one if you are carrying a gun. I can send you a copy of the statute if you would like Or a letter from the Director. If you have a CPL and are not using it to kill game, you can carry a concealed weapon even during deer season.

Michigan hunters: Here is the question that was presented to the Director's office:

I frequent the State Lands during hunting season with my beagles which I train to run rabbits. Do I need a hunting license for this endeavor ?"

The answer is: " You do not need a hunting license for the activity you described. A hunting license IS required when bear or bobcat are being chased by dogs during the open season for those species." This is verbatim.

I have discussed this issue with many CO's that stop me. I have even showed them the letter. I talked personally with the Deputy Director in charge of the DNR a few years ago for confirmation. If my information is incorrect, please advise. As far as I know, nothing has changed.

Can not carry anything other than a training pistol out of season.......you do not have to have a hunting license to run dogs as long as you are a resident of Ohio a drivers license or state I'd will do along with your signed permission slip.

here in kentucky u do have to have a huntin licence to run dogs when season is closed,but u can carry a pistol legally if u have your concealed carry licence during runnin.you can also leagally carry it when u are bow hunting,we went as a group and got ours bout 8 hr course we did it in one day then the instructor sends off ur completion certificate then they send a form to u which u have to take to your locall sherifs office then they send a form off then about a month to month in a half later after your cource you will get your concealed carry licence,might come in handy when u aint runnin to never no bout people anymore....charles..''PUCKETT'S RIDGE SQUALLIN KENNEL''

In Vermont, you MUST have a hunting license to run dogs, in or out of season. I was told that you are pursuing state game (hare). It's not legal to buy hare so if you have hare in a running enclosure, it belongs to the state, so a license is required. f you have a permit for a running area, I THINK you can carry a weapon anytime. If running in the wild, the only time you may carry a weapon is during season. No weapon is permitted during closed season in the wild, training dogs. That's the way I read it.
