info on bottle feeding newborn pup

Post by fastback »

my gyp started having puppies sometime Sunday morning she had two, one born dead, then she laid on the other one, then had a couple more Sunday afternoon, laid on both of them, monday morning she had one more, when I found it it was cold but alive I put it in a heating pad tryed to warm it up, then took it to the vet, they decided to put it to sleep.
So I took the gyp back to the vet to have her checked for more puppies cause she still looked big, the vet put his finger in there and said one tryed to suck the end of his finger, he gave her a shot that would stimulate her uterus. I put her in my floor board of my truck went back in to pay my bill came back out to two puppies in my floorboard and of course mama was squishing em so I picked the puppies up went back in to the vets office, got milk and bottle, things were ok till I let mama have a supervised visit with pups in the laundry room last night I sat and watched for a while and she was doing a good job with them, I left for 20 mins came back she killed another one, so now I'm down to one pup, and both mom and dad are excellent rabbit dogs and they're both 8 yrs old so I really wanted some pups out of them,
So I'm afraid it's just me and the baby bottle that can save this last one.
has anybody had luck doing this?
its been 24hrs and he's still alive.
Sorry about the long story.

make sure the hole in nipple is large so the pup don't have suck real hard --your vet can show you how to tube feed the pup it is a lot faster and easier-and you know how much to feed the pup --DON'T OVER FEED --you will have to feed about every four hours for the first week or a little longer if he doesn't gain weight fast enough

Thanks allniter I've opened up the nipple more and it helped alot. And the tube feeding sounds like it would be easier.
I wonder how long I'll need to do this before i could turn it back over to the mother

Not much on bottle feeding but tube feeding works great. Yes the LITTLE BLACK BOOK is worth every penny and so are the videos. Have not lost a pup sense i have had it.Plus i do 95% of my own treating of my hounds. Which saves on vet bills.
Preparing Sire and Dam before breeding and during whelping is important to raising healthy pups.
It has help with less loss of pups and healther pups through out.
The Book info works!

I just wanted to post an update on the puppy, I bottle feed him for 3 weeks and he was doing good. Then my pitbull had puppies and I decided to try and slip him in with her litter, and mama took him right in and has been nursing him for over a week now, that took a huge load off my mind.
By the way does anybody want a half pit, half lab puppy :D
