Open wound. Any other suggestions? HELP PLEASE

Post by D.J. Wright »

I had 2 get to fighting on the way back from Nebraska and they have some bad wounds to their rear legs. I took them to the 24 hr animal hospital in Raleigh on Saturday night and they were going into shock when we arrived. They took them into sugery and cleaned the wounds and started them on Antibotics and fluids. They stayed there for 2 days and i went to pick them up they had drain tubes and came home with 2 antibotics, pain meds. One of them Wed. night had the stitches out and the wound was back open. So back to the ED Thursday morning they took her back to surgery and removed the drain tube and made some small relief cuts to give a some room for movement because like when she stands to go to the bathroom or turn around there wasnt enough room for the skin to move and it would tear. They put more stitches in place and left a small hole for drainage. So I picked her up Thursday night and everything was going good had Elizabethan Collar in place and she wanted to lick it so bad and she was unable to reach it, I have been using hot compress on the wounds to clean and stimulate 2 to 3 times a day. Well this afternoon when I was giving her meds I noticed some of the stitches had came apart again :mad2: . there is a hole on the inside of ther leg near milk sack a little bigger than a quarter and you can see down into her and see her leg muscle. The vet told me if they didnt hold this time we would have to treat it as a open wound. I now have $2,300.00 dollars in these 2 dogs at the vet and yes they are alot better than they were and appear to be in no distress other than wanting to lick them and stretching the stitches causing the holes to come back. So what would you Do? Im all ears and wanting some suggestions! So if any of you have gone thru something like this please HELP! Thanks DJ

i have jack russels that get eat up all the time. ive seen the types of holes that your talking about where you can see way down in the muscle. The vets are milking you for money. they should have stapled it together if they was worried about it. My vet did this and it always works for me. i dont even take them to the vet anymore. Leave the wounds open and treat them as much as possible with peroxide. the spray bottles of peroxide are the best then pat dry. get your vet to get you some antibiotics for infection. the open wound will allow it to heal from the inside out and try not to let the outside hole close up before the inside is healed or it will have fluid buildup. keep the dogs in clean quarters and the wounds will heal in a week or so. ive done it many times and it works trust me. as long as there is no bleeding they will be fine. just remember peroxide and antibiotics. hope this helps

Our fox hounds and my brother's hog dogs get cut alot, we use staples (do this ourselves) and after stapling the best to place on cut is Preperation H, it will help with the swelling of tissue and it will heal. we also go through alot of Super Glue, i have small surgical scissors, cut hair down almost a shave, Super Glue starting at top side and leave a drain hole at bottom, let dry and apply Preperation H all around cut.

I agree use the glue but leave a drain hole. Main thing is keep em clean.

I had a dog get cut Sunday night. She's cut in her leg muscle up under in the groin area. Must of got caught on a fence or poked with a stick. It's deep I can see muscle down inside and about an inch long. I cleaned it out good with peoxide and put neosporin on it. Also had some antibiotics on hand to give her. It isn't bleeding or swelling. Looks OK except for being a deep cut. From what I'm reading here I should let it open and heal from the inside out? Also have Nu-stock. Is this good for deep cuts?
I live back in the woods you see, my woman and the kids and the dogs and me.

Your local vet should have Neo-Predef with Tetracaine powder. It works good on wounds.
