Re: temperature question
As long as they have shade and water they should be fine........which they should have available at all times anyway. The only thing I will try to do is freshen their water a time or two during the day so they have cold water to drink but any water is enough generally. And use a bigger dish like a 2 gallon size bucket because the water will stay cold a little longer............and maybe a bunch of ice cubes.

Re: temperature question
the heat is a little harder on younger pups my buddy just had a litter of 10 had a fan on them and lost 4 due to heat he came got my 4x8 above ground kennel with a walmart 89 dollar air cond on the back hadnt had any trouble since that is the cheapest way to go cost me 100 to build the pen and 89 for air
Re: temperature question
Another good thing to do with puppies and older dogs i guess, is take a gallon milk jug and fill it with water. Put it in the freezer and let it freeze. Put it in the kennel with the pups. Set back and watch. They will all gravitate toward the cold milk jug. This has been a life saver for a lot of puppies. I keep two froze and just alternate them out when they thaw.

Re: temperature question
Yea but you fellas are talking about newborns........I can see it with pups that young but a 4 month old??
I'm not telling him not to do something like maybe even the frozen milk jug trick but a.c. for a pup that old is something I wouldn't think is necessary.
I'm surprised any of the wild animals down your way manage to survive in the heat without a window shaker to keep them cool.
jk............kind of.

Re: temperature question
I just make sure mine have shade and plenty of water . They can stand more heat than you think they can even at 4 months old. I have two pups that are 3 months old and I can let them out of the kennel and they will run and play/wrestle in the heat just like they do when it is cooler but I don't leave them out as long when it is hot. When I look at the dogs in the kennel the pups seem like they are taking the heat better than the older dogs.

Re: temperature question
Hey guys, just my opinion, but there are so many debates on the type of food we feed our dogs, which are better for them which have the best ingredients and so on, we always want to relate to them being like our family and doing the best for them. I would not want to be left outside in 100 degree heat, and I know the cold water helps, but 4 month old pups could play with the bowl and spill most of it, and be left with none to drink. Depending on how long you are away, it could cause heat stroke if there is no shade or water. I know this would not work with a huge kennel with many dogs, in which case a/c would work . I bring mine in with the extreme heat, and put a fan on them , and keep water bottles in each kennel, so they can only drink and not spill a bowl. Again just my opinion. good luck
Re: temperature question
I would leave them outside. As long as they have some shade or a top on the run. As far as water, I buy heavy ceramic bowls found in most pet and feed stores. I use these for my pups because they are impossible to tip over and spill water. As long as they have enough water and shade they are fine....Deerhost

Re: temperature question
like has already been said animals can tolerate the outside weather alot more than we think you watch dogs that are let run loose and run anytime they like they will be laying up in the shade when it gets hot up in the day They know how to take care of themselves

Re: temperature question
.......and again as long as we provide them with shade and water. Wild animals aren't locked inside of a kennel or chained to a doghouse so they can go find their own shade and water. I hate nothing more than to see a dog chained to a doghouse out in the middle of someones yard with no shade around.............water or not.

Re: temperature question
Me either and them be wrapped up those people dont need a dog i know some have to chain thier dogs up and it dont hurt if they are took care of but personally i dont like chaining one up but i have had to before and hated it
Re: temperature question
I love to chain hounds out.
Nothing calms and matures a hound like being out on chain.
You can move hounds to fresh ground often...but to a hound, nothing beats the heat like a good dirt hole under a maple shade...
To each his own...

S.R., don't take my comment the wrong way.........I'm only talking about the people that I see do it and the dog NEVER moves. I always figured if you don't wanna spend time with an animal then why own it???

Re: temperature question
In recent months I gave a farmer down the road a couple of AKC beagles that just didn't match what I was looking for, today I went by just to check on the dogs and the farmer,He has them both in a pen that is about 50 yards wide with tree's all over and a large concret slab in the middle that female dug a hole just big enough for her to fit inside of and about mid ways of that slab and had 5 pups.a mix between patch and tri-color.Now don't get me wrong I'm proud for the farmer but I have spent alot of money for puppy pens with heat and fans and I'll loose about 90% of them and here he is with nothing more than a hole in the ground and the pups are happy as they can be.Go figure!!!
