Removing Dew Claws
Had a litter born Friday morning. I need some tips on removing the dew claws. Thanks

Re: Removing Dew Claws
I used to remove the dew claws from all my pups. I just used a single edge razor and had a helper to hold the pup (someone you can trust to hold it still). I would hold the toe out with my thumb and index finger, then "shave" it off. It will bleed a little, but if you just place the pup back into the whelping box, the bitch will keep it clean. It will scab over quickly and be healed by weaning time. I never had any complications with this method. Just make sure you do it within the first three days after birth. The pup will fuss through the process but it its from being constrained by your helper, who should be holding it firmly. The fussing starts when you begin holding it before even touching the dew claw, then quiets down when you place it back in its bed. There maybe better methods, but this worked for me and there was virtually no scarring.

I have used toenail clippers but my favorite way is to use a pair of dykes or side cutters heat them up on stove snip off no blood as it carterizes as it cuts also do wifes little yorkies and boxers tails the same way

Remove them at 3 to 5 days old. Use Hemostats. Lock them close to the foot as possible. Take your fingernail and rip off the toe. Leave the hemostats locked for a few seconds. It will crush the blood vessels. Be prepared with some super glue in case of bleeding. Wipe wound clean and apply the super glue. Blow for quick drying. My vet taught me how. I have taken off several.
Good luck

Oakhill,
That method sounds good. I had someone tell me to use a hemostat and a razor but I didn't understand how to do it. They were saying to grab the nail with the hemostats, pull it away from the foot and slice with the razor as close to the foot as possible. Clipping seemed to make more sense to me. You explained it well. I'll try that way next time. I also was told about the super glue. Do you think maybe there are some chemicals in the glue that could be harmfull?
This was my first time raising a litter and my females first time to. Lots of good help on here about welping . The pups came 3 days early. It was close to the full moon. Someone told me dogs will deliver early if the moon is full or near full. I checked on her at 5 am she had 7 pups but 2 were wet, cold and dead. Looked like they weren't licked off or maybe born dead. But she is being a great mother and the 5 pups are a week old now and are fat and healthy.

My cousin does cement work and gets some bad cracks in his hands from dry skin. He super glues them together. Works for him!
