I ran a fox for about 3 hours today and when my best dog came in, it looked like he had wrenched his shoulder. He was limping badly and had pain in the area. Doesn't look like the shoulder is dislocated but definitely was close. Question: What do you recommend? Aspirin maybe? Rest? He is a tough hombre and it hurts to see him like this.

Re: Blown Shoulder
I would suggest ibuprofen for inflammation. I am not sure of the dosage, but a vet reccomended this over aspirin. Hope this helps.

Re: Blown Shoulder
rub down with something with Lanolin in it. I use Pink Ointment everytime Ive had one stress a muscle and they always come out of it quick. Years ago I was running my hounds and they went into a Dozer pile. Gracie came out of it with a dead front leg, it was just draggin where she had pulled a muscle or something. I stood up to get the lead off and a dog hit and she took off on three legs, ran forever before I could catch her. That night when I got her out of the box I coated her shoulder leg and paw with Pink Ointment, fed dogs and went inside. Next day went out to check on her and she was jumping up and down and I could not tell anything was even wrong with her. I have used it several times over the years and it works. I assume it is the Lanolin in the Ointment. Thought about getting some linament like they use for horses but never have.

Re: Blown Shoulder
If you're certain the shoulder isn't "out of place" an 80 mg baby aspirin for pain and plenty of rest should do. If you feel he needs more than that, see the vet for maybe a stronger anti-inflammatory or...maybe the shoulder is still out some. (???) Don't give any analgesics except baby aspirin. I've been told Tylenol (acetimenophen) is toxic to dogs.

I'd give him Dex no doubt about it he'll feel better in no time just dont run him right away its a false sense of feeling good. Give him .5cc for 3 days and let him rest. The dex will take out any inflamation and ease the pain.
Take your kids huntin and you wont have to hunt for your kids.

Mobeagle: What is DEX. sorry I am an idiot.
The vet this AM said he will be OK and Only gave him Deramax. She said it was for pain. She also said to rest him, but he is tough, he has to work every day.
