Safe-guard paste for worms??

Anyone use safeguard paste for beagles? What is the dosage that you should give. I notice a small grey/white worm in my beagles stool this morning while hunting, about 1/4" long. What kind of worm is it? I have the paste but have been worried about administering it. I have been told one turn???

i use it. works great. dont get tapes or heartworms, but about everything else it takes care of. its the same thing as PANACUR. for a beagle, i give 1 teaspoon for 3 days in a row. repeat this every 3 months and you should stay worm free. i keep 8 bragles (approx

) and this costs me about $30 a year to keep them ALL wormfree. panacur from my vet would cost $15 for a 3 day dose for 1 dog, so the savings is great.

Safeguard works good for me, I also use the paste. I started with beagles about three years ago and I use this because of recomendations from a couple of long timers.

I use both Panacur or SafeGuard. I use the tubes of paste with one notch 3 days in a row...every 3 months..

I have been using "Safeguard" for the past three or four years. It is working well for my dogs. My vet told me to give it at least monthly and every three weeks if any of my dogs had a problem with pin worms. I particularly like the fact that you can give it to females carrying pups. I also give a teaspoon per day for three days.

thanks for the information. Anyone know what kind of worm I described? Do you actually squirt the paste out in a teaspoon to measure the dosage? I have been told the dosage isn't real critical, one notch, one teaspoon or one turn. I am just very cautious and looking for some consensus.

I have always used IVOMEC it's a cattle and swine dewormer, but give your dog about a half of cc and it will take care of about anything from heartworms to mange it's the best stuff I have ever used on my beagles. I had never heard of it until one of the local coonhunters "also a vet" told me about it. Thats all I ever use It's takes care of every thing in one dosage.

Tennessee, I think that the worm that you saw in your dog's stool was probably a tapeworm segment. Was it more flat than round? Those who supposedly know, say that tapeworms don't actually cause dogs much harm since they feed on fecal matter but, they sure look ugly. As for using Ivomec, I use it also but, there is some difference of opinion as to how to administer it. At least two vets have advised me to never give it full strength. I started out giving it full strength under the skin and then I found out that it causes intense itching at the site of the injection. I also was told that it is very hard on dog's kidneys. I got the dilution instructions from a vet and have been just squirting it on the back of the dog's tongue ever since. I was also told that it is not very effective on tapeworms since they do not feed on the dog's blood. I don't pretend to be an expert on the subject though. If a person has any questions about it, or any medication, they should seek the advice of a vet that they trust.

One notch, one turn, same thing with the past tube, 3 days in a row every 3 months. I did lose a border collie one time that licked up what fell out of a horses mouth while worming with Ivormectin.

I use safe guard. Use 1/4 of a turn per 4 pounds of dog. That is the recomended dosage per active ingredient. Use it 3 days in a row every other month. It will get most worms including tape. Then treat for heart worm every month with ivomec 1/10 of a cc per 10 pounds of dog. Treat your dogs well and they will return the favor 10 fold.

The liquid form (usually sold as hog wormer) is a much more potent formulation than the paste. The dosage rate is pretty safe but you CAN overdose, especially with the liquid. For that reason I use the paste as a general purpose wormer during the winter. For a 20 pound dog, I give about a pea sized portion once a month. For tapeworm, I use about 3cc, 3 days in a row, but it only works on one of the 3 different common tapeworm varieties. Keep in mind that it has no effectiveness against heartworm, so during mosquito season I use Ivermectin once a month, then switch to Safegard during the winter.

I am a long-time Safe-Guard user also and am a happy customer and so are my hounds. I administer 2 1/2cc's 3 days in a row every other month for intestinal worms and use Ivomec at 1/10 cc per 10 lbs for heartworms during flea and mosquito season. I carry my hounds to my vet at least once per year whether they need it or not for a general checkup and he alsways does a parasite test and they always come back clean and parasite free, so I guess the S-G and Ivomec are doing their jobs!

S-G also has a very low chance of overdose and is quite safe. Valbazen and some of the others are just too harsh in my opinion.
