I was reading one of the current posts "True Beagles" and it got me thinking. Does anyone try and breed for both field and conformation? I know the last DC was Pebble Ridge Shadrack, but that was awhile ago. I am new to beagles but was heavily involved in Labs for awhile and seen such a difference between "show dogs" and "field dogs" and now they have "English labs" that are totally different than the others. I just dont understand why registries keep allowing breeds to be divided into several sub-breeds. Has the beagle suffered the same? Or do the field people just not get involved in shows and show people not get involved in the field? I am speaking mostly about the AKC, I know that some of the registries stay true to both.
Anyone have an opinion on this?

Yes, I've only been breeding a short time but have always looked to keep conformation in my hounds. If there is one breed that SHOULD NOT have a division between working and show type, it's the Beagle. As far as I'm concerned, it should be difficult to impossible to tell which ones are show/field bred ...
I recently made my first show/field cross, the bitch was a champion in AKC/UKC and had more gameness than some of my field bred hounds!Let me tell you, she put some of them to shame, lol. Have a nice male pup out of that cross who should do well in UKC conformation once he's older and grown into his legs
He's not started yet (he's 5 mos) but is showing promise in the field and is doing a good job working out the scent with the big dawgs. I see no reason why with experience & time in the field he can't be a good rabbit dog.
Also planning another show/field cross in the spring or summer to a field bitch that goes back to New City & has some show breeding behind her to a show bred CH male. He is not as accurate on the line and sometimes lacks search (but not always, he's been inconsistant in this area but he only started hunting @ age 5) but otherwise, he thinks he is just your average rabbit dog. His littermate sister (not owned by me) is hunted with and does weight pull as well. I have heard of a very few lines that have hunt bred out of them but for the most part, show Beagles will hunt.
I am in no way experienced in dual purpose hounds, tho. There are others here who have achieved great things with their dogs and proven show dogs can hunt and hunting dogs can be shown. You'll get much better advice from them than me.
One show bred, one show/field, one all field ... which is which? lol
They ALL are rabbit hounds, btw.

Jim and others, do you feel there could be a difference in putting looks into "hunting dogs" than it would be putting hunt into "show dogs?" I would think it would be easier to put hunt into show dogs, but enough hunt/drive/talent to FC in the field? I dunno. *shrugs*
