IVOMEC - anyone still using 1% cattle solution?

Post by sgc »

Just curious. I had been using Heartgard from the Vets, but since I recently ran out of it, I went to Tractor Supply and bought the 1% cattle solution - IVOMEC. I plan on injecting it (2/10 th. cc per dog). The clerk at Tractor Supply said she wouldn't recommend using it on dogs. I used it for years in the past & never had a problem and never had heartworms. Is anyone else still using it? Heartgard thru the Vets gets expensive. I've heard where you can order Heargard from outside the U.S. & I believe I have the contact information for that, but, again, I'm wondering what you all think about using the IVOMEC.

Still use it and have never had a case of heatworms or a sick dog from it. I just lost one dog about a year ago at the ripe old age of 15 and she was on it all of her life. It is not labled for dogs is why it isn't recomended. Its all in the lable lol.
I use 1/10 cc per 10 lbs and I also inject instead of giving it oral. Maybe its the south but at that dosage I have not had success with it gettin other worms so I use te safeguard horse paste (fenbendazol) once a month also and Droncit as needed for tapes.
Another good thing about ivomec is it can also be used to treat red mange and ear mites.

I use it also, started late this past year, and i've never seen my hounds look healthier. I also use it along with safeguard. Ivomec every month, safeguard paste every three months or if i see worms in their stool. My hounds weigh about 20-25 lb. each, but we live in mosquito infested country, so in the summer i up their dose to between 1/4 cc to 3/10ths of a cc. usually in June, July, and August, when the skeeters are the worst.

We've used for about 5 years. Our vet said it works just fine when used 1/10 of a cc per 10 pounds per month. Just don't used it on Collies or other similar breeds, according to our vet. It will kill them. Our vet said it will also cure dogs of large round worms as well and some other pesticites but not whip or hook worms.

I also know of someone who has cured their dogs of heartworm by using Ivermectin in a different way. Our vet said that it can be done but at risk of possibly killing the dog or the possible need to treat more than once. This method is a lot cheaper than the vet though. A bottle of Ivomec is less than $40 compared to the cost, about $350, we had last year to cure a dog we accidentally bought with heartworms. We considered using Ivomec then but we had the money to have our vet do it. I looked at it as insurance compared to us accidentally killing him.

We also use an all-in-one wormer from Austraila. It gets everything including tape worm but not heart worm. The all-in-one wormer cost less than $3.00 per pill, (if the value of our dollar doesn't drop anymore), and one pill covers 20 pounds and is given every 3 months. The pills can also be cut into smaller pieces so you can treat a 25 pound dog. Pretty inexpensive if you ask me and it seems to work quite well. I know personally that it cured one of our dogs of tape worms and we have never had whip or hook since we started using it. If anybody is interested in the all-in-one wormers, see Jim Stinnett on this board.

so when you say you inject it do you mean straight into the blood stream or under the skin? I've used it for years as well and have always givenit orally. Ive tested the effects of it being overdosed and had no problems as well, my two old dogs lived to be 15 and 17 so far one is still going at 17.

Under the skin. There's been some talk in the past about the harshness of it hurting the sense of smell when given orally.

If you give it orally, try mixing it with gatorade, it cuts down on the bitterness and it isn't so harsh.
