cherry eye

I have a seven month old male pup, at four months of age he got a cherry eye. Took him to the vet, had it cut out, seemed to be gone and overwith. But now, at seven months old, it back. Same eye, same place. Anyone ever seen this? If so, when I have it fixed again, is it going to keep coming back, or think it wasnt done right the first time? Thanks in advance Chris

What did the vet call it? I have heard everyone call it cherry eye, but when a couple of mine had it the vet said one was a third eyelid on one dog that ended up coming in both eyes. The other dog he said it was a cyst and cut it out. this was the same vet and the charge was 120.00.

The vet said it was a third eye lid, that gets infected. Or at least that was my understanding of what it is, I could see both eyes on a dog doing this, but Ive never seen the same one twice. My vet said they are getting more and more common in beagles.

The "new" precedure is to "tack it back in place". It makes future complications such as "dry eye" less likely. The downside is that it sometimes pops out again later. Sometimes an irritation or infection can cause a temporary cherry-eye that will move back into place once the problem goes away. I had a young female that had cherry eye that vet 'tacked it back". He warned me that until the swelling from the surgery went away she would have slight "haws" and that if it did not go away eventually, he would "adjust it" free of charge. I noticed the other day that only a slight bit of membrane is showing now. I really do not want her to have eye trouble that prevents me from hunting her so I think we will leave it well enough alone for now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The reason it is becoming more common is because people are breeding from those who have it.
It is a weakness when showing itself has a high tendency to be passed on. It is no different than a hernia, it is a weakening or thinness in the muscle that allows a tearing or seperation to occur when against stress or put under pressure.
If a vet will guarantee his work, I'd have no problem tacking it back in. If not, I'd have the inner lid removed while leaving the tear duct intact.
Enjoy her for all the years she will give you but, do not breed from her. jmho
