How would you handle it

I have a male that I raised from a pup, he is fading fast from kidney failure do I let him ride it out until he dies or have him put down? He will not eat or drink right now and I hate to see him suffer. He is the same one that I posted about last week that the dog warden said was too skinny. I put him on canned food 3 weeks ago and he started picking up weight pretty good and was full of energy. I ran him this weekend and since then he will not eat at all and has gotten dehydrated, I am sure I can spend a couple of hundred dollars at the vet to keep him alive another week or to, but don't see the use in doing that . Kidney failure runs in his line on the dams side so I never bred him.

Personally, I wouldn't let him suffer. Do what's best for the dog.

If you are sure that his kidney is failing i think that it would be the right thing to do as well.

Big Dog Sounds like you Already know the right thing to do, just need some justification.
You Will do the right thing.
ME personally i would take him in Give him a big ol HERSHY bar or M&Ms ,a Fried Chicken leg then let the Vet Give him the shot praise him till he goes to Sleep then Go get me a big ol KY Size Shot of Wild Turkey and Say my Good byes..
But thats just me personally.......

Best dog I ever had died from it 2yrs ago. Had the vet pumping fluids into him for four days, then had to put him down. Hardest thing I've ever had to do. Take him to the vet and make sure thats what it is. If it is dont let him suffer.bg

You will know when it is the right time.
I kept doctoring one of mine failing from kidney failure for 2 weeks.
It finally got to the point when I knew it was time.

Did the vet check for diabetes?
Some lines are prone to diabetes, which causes kidney failure.
I don't think knowing that now will help your hound, but something to keep in mind in the future.

was in a very similiar situation a few years ago n listened to my wife instead of my HEART n i had a beagle SUFFERING from kidney failure i had him to 2 different vets kept bringing him back home this went on for about a month finally got up one morning n he had died on my porch if i had it to do over i would have had him put down instead of suffering for 3 or 4 weeks lost control of everything quit eating just layed there dieing i absolutly wouldnt do it again no matter what wife or 2 daughters said what i should have done is whats best for the dog jb

I think we're all in agreement on this one. I would do what's best for the dog and sometimes that means putting an end to the suffering.

I'm very sorry to hear that. I know how you feel. I lost my Lacey dog two weeks ago to the same thing. He wasn't the best, but I knew when we went hunting he would give it every thing he had. Lacey was the first one I have lost to kidney failure, that I know of.

Most of us who have gone through this can feel empathy toward your plight. They mean so much to us, that we just absolutely hate to see them go. But, in the end, since they mean so much to us, we will do the right thing, and have the vet put them down. Just be sure to be there and hold him while the medication takes effect, and remember that he is going to the great hunting ground in heaven where there are always rabbits to run. He is just waiting for you to join him someday, when he will be ready to run rabbits for you again. And may God give you the strength to see it through.

Sorry to hear this Big Dog. We had to put down our champion female in Oct, 6 months after she was diagnosed with kidney failure. matt had taken her running the week before and he said she kicked butt. he said she was close to being "back to her old self". a few days later (friday) she quit eating and drinking. we brought her in and she would drink and then throw up. each day she got progessively worse. the vet couldn't get us in on monday, but tuesday morning we took her to the vet. We drove in silence. We only live 20 minutes from town, but this drive felt like 3 hours. The vet said we had no other option and without discussion we said our goodbyes and Matt held her and praised her while they gave her the shot. I'm sitting here in tears bawling like a baby just thinking of her and how proud she made us. I had a guy ask me about her at our trial a few weeks ago and he referred to her as the little dog you carried through the brush. I had to laugh b/c that is what I did with her...giving her kisses and praising her until we cut loose again.



She's in a better place now. Running bunnies in doggy heaven...pain free. I hope the my girl is waiting for me at the gate...

As I'm sure your's will be waiting on you as well.
I know it doesn't seem like it, but YOU DID do the right thing.

I had the same thing happen to the best Coyote hound I ever had and wasted a lot of money trying to keep her alive,while Vet was telling me that I was going to lose the battle. Today I am sorry I let her die a hard death and now when the kidneys go, I know what must be done. a hound suffers a lot before it dies when the kidneys fail. I feel your pain.
