Long three days of Rabbit hunting...Pics

Post by Joeyman »

Well I am tired and worn out. We hunted hard for three days straight. Running has been pretty good in MO. Plenty of rabbit in the fields. It has been pretty cold in the morning running not that good on frosty frozen ground it picks up after the temps go up and the ground thaws out some. Then the dogs hammer. We got 4 Friday 4 saturday and 5 on sunday. On average the dogs would run 8 to 9 rabbits a day. Some would hole up and a few just disappeared. On to the next one....Sunday I horse whipped the dogs even more. We hunted from 6:45 to 1:30. I loaded up the dogs in the truck the dogs slept the hour long drive home. I was freezing and had the heater turned all the way up the whole way home. During the hunt Freezing rain was falling. It was fun at first but then I was getting wet in 30 degree weather. By the time I got home the dogs didn't even want to come out of the dog box. I had to carry them to their kennel. NOT KIDDING either. I put them down on the ground and they just stood their with their eyes shut and didn't move. So I picked them up one by one and put them in some warm straw. My one female curled up in a ball in the small nest she made in the straw. They have been sleeping all night and morning long.

Hey tracy

We hunted whetstone friday. That place is huge it's unreal. It all looks good for rabbit hunting. We kind of went in blind and just picked a spot threw the dogs down and see what happens. We had some good races I'll tell you what. I went with Done Gone Beagles he brought 4 dogs and along with my dogs we had 8 total. They all worked well together. The most exciting race was towards the end of our hunt when the dogs pounded the ground for just over 45 minutes almost non stop. With in that 45 minutes I'd have to say the dogs had 4 to 5 minute long checks kind of spread out. It was a good chase. We didn't get to kill that huge rabbit but we did shoot at it from far away. It finally laid down somewhere and hid in a good spot. The dogs lost it. I bet that was one tired bunny 45 minutes on the move. He lives for now

I'm thinking about going to whetstone again.

I may head out there again this weekend. I don't know what day I want to go either saturday or sunday. Dec 8th is antlerless portion of deer hunting I still have a tag to fill so I'm going to try it again.

I spent a little time driving thru the area. It just kept going and going. I saw some other rabbit hunters in there and also a few bird hunters. It's a very nice CA.
