HOW DO NEW JUDGES GET NOTICED THE MOST?
I RECENTLY RECEIVED MY JUDGES LIC FROM AKC, & I WAS WONDERING HOW DO NEW JUDGES GET TO BE NOTICED? I'VE JUDGED SOME ALL AGE & DERBY TRIALS IN THE MID WEST GUNDOG ASSOCIATION IN THE PAST. IS THIS TYPE OF JUDGING, LIKE PLAYING IN THE MINORS, WHERE ONCE YOU EXCELL YOU MOVE UP TO THE BIG TIME? I KNOW FROM TRIALING THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF OUTSTANDING JUDGES OUT THERE THAT JUDGE ON A REGULAR BASIS. IF I CAN DO HALF THE JOB THAT THESE GUYS DO, THEN I THINK I'LL MAKE A DECENT JUDGE. DO ANY OF YOU EXPERIENCED JUDGES HAVE ANY THOUGHTS OR SUGGESTIONS ON THIS TOPIC? IF YOU DO, PLEASE POST THEM. IT COULD POSSIBLY HELP US ROOKIES. THANKS!
Contact some of the Field Trial Secretaries at the clubs in your area. Volunteer to judge, if they already have the judges, do some marshalling and let them know if they have any no show's that you are licensed and can fill in. The biggest thing with judges is dependability. If you agree to judge, dont cancel the night before!

i agree,i have not been to a ton of akc trials, but i have noticed one thing,i have came away from every one feelin i have gotten a fair shake and feelin the best dog that day did win,so obviously the clubs do their homework and hire the best availible, one of the best i have ever seen is earl rice, that is why you can open the better beagler and see his name all over the country at trials,he would be a good en to try to judge under to pick up tips, there are a lot of top notch judges in akc, look who's names appear the most, and then ask them for pointers,be fair and be consistent and you will have no problem, just remember,it is about the dogs, not the owners and you will be fine.SilverZuk wrote:Once you get to judge some, you will find that there is a lot left to learn.
Be fair and consistent.
If you are a good judge, you will get noticed.

I am not sure what you mean by the "Big Time"???BlueGrass Boy 1 wrote: I'VE JUDGED SOME ALL AGE & DERBY TRIALS IN THE MID WEST GUNDOG ASSOCIATION IN THE PAST. IS THIS TYPE OF JUDGING, LIKE PLAYING IN THE MINORS, WHERE ONCE YOU EXCELL YOU MOVE UP TO THE BIG TIME?
I am a FTC for an AKC SPO club and have served on the judges committee. We like to use the newer judges in our derby trials paired up with more experienced judges. It gives the trialers a chance to get to know them and gives them more experience judging. The AKC clubs talk about "up and coming judges" all the time. If you are honest, consistant, polite and you hussle to get score, you will get a reputation for that and will get used a good bit. I see this happening with one of our newer club judges now. He took his seminar, started out judging club trials and derbies and people took notice. He was hired for a couple of licensed trials last year and met all expectations. Trialing season doesn't really start in our area till the end of Sept, but he already has 5 licensed trials booked and has turned down a couple AND the phone keeps ringing.
Good luck to you.
Don't squat with your spurs on!

I'm not sure I know you but I assume you placed in top three to like my judging that much.
Thanks for the positive comments about my judging. As a judge you hear so many negative things it's nice to hear something positive every once and a while.

1st -Call all clubs and let them know you want to judge (Let them know you would like to be an alternate judge or to judge a split class if the club needs one)
2nd-Ask about judging at their derby or all age trials
3rd- If they don't need judges or already have their judges then volunteer to mashall, pass out collars or help in anyway.
4th- Attend/Run your hounds in as many trials as you can afford to. While there talk to other beaglers, club members or anyone that will listen. (Once clubs know what you stand for you will get your chance.
Once you get the opportunity, be ready.
Good luck,
Earl

Well there are alot of things that will get you noticed for good and bad.
1 Spend time with well known and knowledgible houndsmen ask lots of questions and listen when they speak. Just because they are successful does not mean they are the best to spend time around.
2 Continue to judge as much as you can it does not matter if it is derby or qualifiers they are sll still judge they same way and you should give the same amount of effort for them as you would a Lic. trial.
3 When at trials let the committees for the trials know that you are now Lic.
4 Offer to marshall lic. trials so that the other judes see you efforts and ask questions of them when you can.
These last 2 are by far the most important of all!!
A. Judge the end of the lead that has the 4 legs and pay no mind to the owner or handler whether you like them or not, JUDGE THE HOUND.
B. HONESTY WILL GET YOU JUDGING ASSIGNMENTS.
Hope this helps
