SELLING PUPS

Post by PLSIII »

WHEN YOU SELL YOUR PUPS DO YOU STAND BEHIND THEM, WHEN I SELL PUPS I TELL THE NEW OWNER THAT IF THEY DON'T TURN OUT THAT I'LL REPLACE THE PUP WITH ANOTHER ONE, AS LONG AS THEY PUT SOME TIME INTO THEM, THAT THEY WILL HUNT AND RUN A RABBIT THEY MIGHT AND MIGHT NOT BE A WOLRD CHAMPION BUT THEY WILL HUNT AND RUN A RABBIT, JUST LOOKING TO SEE WHAT OTHERS DO WHEN SELLING PUPS, HAVE NOT HAD TO REPLACE ANY JUST LOOKING TO SEE WHAT OTHER BREEDERS DO THANKS PAUL

I do not raise many pups but the few I do raise leave with the understanding that I get the first option to buy the pup back if they decide they don't want it for any reason. That way I can place the dog in a suitable home. A breeder has the obligation to every pup he/she raises to get it into a good situation. I do not guarantee replacing a pup because of the scenario where someone could get a pup and then you regret letting that person have one of your pups. Could not imagine being obligated to give that person another pup. In show dogs I would have replaced a show prospect with another show dog if it did not turn out to be show quality. Every dog from every show litter I raised went on to it's AKC Show championship so that was never an issue. I guess if you are raising more pups it might be easier to give some away. If a pup turned out to have some genetic defect or disqualification I would be obligated to replace it.

From Field to Show and Show to Field the way it should be

My take on selling pups is that the owner of the pup has the obligation to know what they are getting into before they purchase my pup. I also have an obligation to put that pup into a good home either as a house pet or as a hunting dog. If possible, I will go and check out where the pup will be living.

I also tell everyone that if they don't want the dog for whatever reason that I will take it back (I didn't say buy it back) and make sure it gets into a good home. Now, if there is a genetic defect or some other disease (like chronic pain syndrome common to beagles) I will then refund the money for the pup. But, I have to see proof from a vet and won't pay for the vet bill.

All people are told my stance on this and have to agree before the pup leaves my house. I am on litter #4 in 10 years and I have yet to get one of my dogs back.

From what I have observed the majority of dog owners dont put the time necessary into a pup to ensure any level of success. Just look on this for sale board and you will find hundreds of "pups" 8-12 months old that have not been started or fooled with much.
Of the 100+ beaglers I know only 5 or 6 really put the time into the pups to ensure success. The rest usually are sent off to starting pens or a friends house to get them going, in hopes the pup will miraculously be a barn burner. Knowing this I would be reluctant to guarentee a pup to be running well or return. I think a breeder should guarentee the health of a pup, ""ESPECIALLY"" when INBREEDING....

I recently bought 3 pups from a guy who made what I thought was a quality cross....1 of the 3 turned out to be above average....I destroyed one and sold the other at puppy price with a very honest assesment. I would'nt dream of going back to the breeder for a partial refund. I do think its important to give the breeder constructive feedback to improve future crosses. Again so few put the time in necessary to be able to offer that feedback.

I am going to start a new thread about how much time a puppy need and how many is reasonable to attempt at one time.......

I think it is a noble thing you are doing, but you must consider a few things.

Will the purchaser run the hound enough, will it get solo time?

Will he take it to a pen to get it started, or to the wild by itself where the first animal it decides to run may be off-game?

If it runs off-game will he know how to break it or just end up making it worse?

Will the pup be run with clean hounds. Too many bactrackers, coldtrailers, boohooers, and any pup could be ruined by running with poor hounds.

I think a guarantee against genetic defect is fair, but I have run into some guys who are not sure which end of the hound to feed.

However if this works for you and are comfortable I say good for you. Quite noble.

Most people in my area they dont do anything with the pup intill rabbitt season take it out and expect it to run rabbitts. So unless you do backround checks to make sure people you sell pups to actually spend the time needed I wouldnt give a guarentee

Stand behind youre pups no matter what. It might cost you money at the time but in the long run it will pay off. I will stand behind mine to start and run no matter what. I know those famous word THEY DONT ALL ALWAYS MAKE IT, but I have yet to see a pup out of my kennel not start if given the chance. I havent had on come back yet but if I did I bet I could get it to start. I have taken pups in on trades and then sold them(which I would advise against even if you are trying to help a buddy out) and then had to raplace them with a pup out of my kennel along with the price of an airline ticket and really had to bite the bullitt but when somebody pays for something no matter what it is they expect to get what thay think they are buying.

I have even sent money to cover vet bills for things that I know were caused after they arrived at there new home but it pays off in the long run to stand behind anything you sale no matter what it is. If you dont want to stand behind it then the best thing to do is cull it or give it away ;) Even if you have money tied up in it it's better to take a small loss than a large one.
If you don't breed for hunt sell you're beagles and buy a POODLE AND SOME PERFUME! GUN DOG'S that's all that matters. The rest will fall in place.

i don't sell many pups but i would not put a garauntee on the pup b/c you don't know what they are going to do with it. I'll let them watch the parents run and if i own the grand parents then them too...i'll give references on my dogs to buyers but never a garuantee thats just not practicle in my opinion. I know too many people who've bought pups from great crosses who only run the dog during rabbit season and maybe a few times in between.

Pups

Post by Big Dog »

On pups the only thing I guarantee is their health, I have never had one leave my house that didn't start, some made better dogs than others but that has a lot to do with the owner. As many have said most people don't put the time into a pup that I would consider adequate and that would hinder me from giving a guarantee on one. I have bought over 30 pups over the last 3 years and very few of them make what I consider above average dogs, most make at least solid rabbit dogs and I sell them to gun hunters in the area. I am looking for something special and they seem to be few and far between.

I never gaurentee anything more then health also, then you run into the problem of people who take the pup out twice and let it sit in the kennel for 6 months then one day there buddy calls and he wants to go rabbit hunting so he takes the pup out and it dont know jack diddly , so i dont gaurentee nothing.
