I wanted to get your feedback please let me know what you think.
Im looking to build a Kennel off of our shed.
My wife was asking me why I didnt build one large kennel ( RUN 10 X 40 ) on the south side and a large kennel ( RUN 10 X 40 ) on the North side.
One side would be for Females and the other for Males
Has anyone ever tried to put several Beagles together like this or not a good idea?
Just looking for your feedback....
Thanks

when i was younger i had a 25 x 50 lot feneced up. i kept between 12 and 15 beagles in there and i loved the setup i had 2 self feeders and 4 good size dog houses in there. The dogs where smart enough to go to one conner for there business. I mixed males and females and sure there where some fights but they built a pecking order. i was running dogs alot back then and it seemed like having them penned up together like that. that it made them a better pack. I always keep a close eye on the females for coming in to heat but other than that it worked really well for me.

Just some thoughts...
Facing South= hot in Summer= need shade/ but good warm sun in Winter
" North= cold in winter= need wind/snow block/ but Summer will be shade/cooler
" East= perfect
" West= hot Summer/cold/windy/rain wet Winter.
Good slope away from building a must...
Concrete w/ 4" slope on 10' about right/ needs to drain and dry quick to keep smell down...
If building has gutters, direct the rain water from roof downspout to trench to help wash out trench across front of slab, or if no gutters, rain from roof will help wash off slab, trench across front of slab will catch and drain for easy pick up, or sink a plastic barrel in the ground w/ a field bed leading away from it as a septic tank.
Hounds that live together work best together...
Only problem is fighters and light eatters...not hard to put up a partition pannel in the middle to seperate these...or cull these for one happy harmonious pack that lives well together...I like males on one side and bitches on the other, I could never catch every female coming in season every time/in time...
Access of electric lights and water a great plus...Feed storage and sickbay room, whelping room with lights and source of heat...
Like a garage, big is never big enough...
Let me know when you get it done, I'll bring hounds over...

I can vouch that the north side and no slope is just awful in the winter. Stays wet and mucky all the time, sun never hits it. Main prob with all together is some don't get to eat. The greedy ones guard the food like there was no tomorrow. Works fine if they all behave. Some females will show no sign of coming in until you see her tied, and you can't always count on the every 6 months thing either. Beagles usually won't fight like pit bulls but sometimes it can get nasty when 2 of them really hate each other.
I to Thought of just 2 large pens when we built our kennel, BUT i have some that are fighters (Brothers) I opted to build 4 5x15 foot runs on both sides for ease of housing only I keep 2 to 3 dogs on each side depending on how they get along and how they eat Ect i am Gonna add another larger pen on the end for pups they have inside housing I dont think i will do this on the other side i like the Box better I also built one (so Far) large pen on the other 10x15 split the dogbox with a divider in case i ever want to divide the runs For females in Season and young pups seems to be working so far I am Gonna add another large pen10x15 on the end with a smaller run in the middle 5x15 not done yet Gonna put awning up on both sides with lights and Water system this spring here is a Pic just after the one side was done....
Big thing is Slope for drainage as was said with a Small septic system Sure keeps the smell down and makes Cleanup a snap......
These are the outside Runs before i cut in the dog doors

This is the housing area I changed the other side to 3'x4'x3' Wood boxes with doors and lids Seems to keep the mess down and easier to heat and cool

This is an ongoing project and i will post more later of the boxes and larger pens

my kennel
Here is the kennel I just built off the back of my garage. Let me know if you have any questions.
If you were on trial for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?

fighting
I like having runs to separate males/females and the ones that become aggressive during feeding time. I agree that putting them together helps them to pack and you can always rotate putting the ones that get along together to help out with that. I like to put a pup in with the dog that I want it to pack with when I start working with it. Everyone has their own system that works. It's all trial and error and what you have to work with.
