Female Came “In-Heat” Unexpectedly???

Post by Keystone Kid »

I have a female that will be 4 yrs old in July. She just came In-Heat a few days ago. But the really straight thing is that she was just In-Heat back in late December. She’s not kenneled with or next to any other bitches that are or have been In-Heat recently. In other words, she was just In-Heat in less than 2.5 month’s ago. I called my vet to see what he thought, but he was no help. He said if there is not a cist, or an off colored discharge involved he doesn’t have any idea what could cause this. I’ve raised this female from a weaned pup, and she is out of my original bloodline that dates back to 1984. In 22 yrs of raising beagles this hasn’t happened to me before that I can recall.

Anyone else had this experience with dogs?

Sounds like a split heat cycle. Normally the 2nd time they come in is the real thing. Was her previous cycle normal?

Split Heats

Split heats are when a bitch shows signs of heat for a few days (bleeding), then stops for 2-10 weeks, and then a normal cycle occurs.
This is a fairly normal event in young bitches and should always be investigated before looking into other problems that prolong estrus.
There is no infertility associated with this condition.

she has alway come in around 6.5 months after her last heat cycle. She did this time to back in December. But now she came in again 2.5 months later.

Are you planning to breed her this time? If not I'd watch her close for Pyometria and just see if her next cycle wasn't normal.

best..
