Beagle on fox trials

Anyone go to these on this board? Hows it work?
Have any of you tried running rabbits with any of the dogs bred to be used in the coyote, fox trials? Are they the same dogs we use for rabbit hunting, but put on fox?

Beagles run and trialed on fox is big in Canada. Check out http://www.beaglescanada.com/index.htm

Look at the top of the page in C.B.F.T.A. From what I was told endurance and speed are key.

What I am thinking about is pups from one of these dogs being used to run rabbits. I like what they are breeding for as you said. Wonder if anyone is doing that now?
Much easier to use a colt out of a race horse to run races rather than breeding up a donkey to run a race!

from the little I know of fox trials ,it is common to see the shaker stuff in them.and of course you sdee it alot in beagle field trials as well.I am sure it is the same with other bloodlines as well.Besides why would you need any more speed than you have?your dogs can roll as they are right now.

Thanks for the compliment. You got to come back in season.

I saw some yesterday that are bred for the fox and coyote pens that were of beagle lines not fanilier to me. Some though were of lines we all know well. They were sure streamlined and bred for mouths to be picked out in a big pack.
You and I breed for straight or at worse easy to break off trash dogs and I was wondering if these fox dogs are hard to break off what I call trash if started on rabbits early?
Might be good to cross breed on them for the size, mouth, confirmation, strength and stamina if all other is equal.

If born naturally trashy, then NO.

John, I've been told that they are purposefully started on fox in pens, etc., and that some of them are hard to keep off rabbits, lol. The ones they can't keep off rabbits they sell to rabbit hunters. In short, I think we all start out with pretty much the same clay, but what we train them on and break them from is two different things. An actual fox trialer may tell you differently - this is just what I've been told.

I just imported a boat load of pups (6), 2 went to KY)that are double bred Money Sunk Mountain Man. The sire is Canadian FTCH Awful Bawlin Let R Rip. He is also a near Fox Trial Champion. Fast? Yes he is, some say the fastest they've seen. Time will tell.

John I am glad that you took it as a compliment because that is strictly the way it was meant .I am not trying to discourage you from trying anything because that is the only way to get better.I just dont see your dogs as lacking in much of anything especially speed and endurance.I cant comment alot on the fox trial beagles as I have no real experience with them.I know the northway Iceman stuff was big for awhile in some fox circles.As I said lately I see alot of shaker stuff.Nate Johnson what does Mountain Man go back to.

I have a Shaker bred bitch that is a Canadian field champion on hare and fox. I have had to get her off deer a couple of times, but she has turned them down since then. I'm sure she will run a fox or coyote if she comes across thier tracks, but I haven't had that problem yet. I have one male pup off her and Brents Bichlick Chimer and he hasn't offered on any off game as of yet. We started him on rabbit and I will be hard on him if he tries to run anything else. I don't think a dog is bred to run a certain scent trail, but is bred to run a certain style. What we choose to let it run is what it will run. Some dogs are just quicker to pick up on what they are not allowed to do than others. Good luck.

John I have rethought my earlier post.since I dont have practical experience in beagles on fox my post should have read that if I was you would contact Dan kane as I think he is big in the Candaian Fox thing and also runs hare and or rabbits with beagles.I think I know of someone in eastern ky also but I need to make sure that they are in fact running beagles on fox as opposed to other breeds.Sorry if I created any confusion with my posts.

Checked the canadian site Nate gave us and wonder what the Happyrun line of Dan Kane is out of? Winning a lot.

no Kanes irish is Rob Kane and his Dad.they are from New England .I think Dan Kane does get on this site though .Bev could tell you for sure though

seems like it would be hard to break one that has made a Champion after fox. They run fox and Coyotes both here in pens. To get one already started after either would be dangerous if a lone dog ran a Coyote out of sight here.

Thanks for your experience that pups not started on fox are OK to break to rabbits only. Could still be a good Dam for rabbit dogs as you said.
