heartworm problems?

Post by rosiebeagle »

Me and my sister own two beagle brothers. Our vet is recommending heartworm medicine for them soon (after winter). They are inside pets, but we do walk them in a field behind our house.

My main question is, has anyone had or known of a Beagle that has had a bad reaction to heartworm medicine?

Our sister had a Collie that died from Heartworm medicine( I know that this is common in Collies) so we are worried about giving them anything.

Get your dog checked before you put him on a heartwormer, if he tests negative then their are many safe ones to choose from. I personally use interceptor on my beagles and have had no problems. Collie's are allergic to Ivermectic so it can cause problems for them.

Thank you for the information. Our vet is the one suggesting to put them on heartworm medicine, but after our own dog ( a lab mix) died two weeks after the vet gave him some medicated eyecream last year and our sisters Collie a few years ago ( the vet said that type of wormer was safe for Collies) sometimes it's hard to deceide what is safe to give them.
