A buddy of mine was running his hounds and two came up messing. My Buddy is 73 years young and loves to get out and sit on a bucket and listen to the dogs. Now he drove around and called for them but no luck. My Buddy (Steve) goes home and recieves a call from a cell phone and a guy asks him if he is missing a couple of hounds. Steve says yes I am and the guy told Steve you don't have to worry about them I shot them and if you bring anymore (blank)ing hounds over here I'll shoot them too. The land Steve runs on borders the land that this guy leases. Steve has never seen or meet him anyhow Steve hangs up on this guy, calls the Sheriff and has them trace the Cell #. Well this guy admits to the Sheriff that he has shot and will shoot anymore hounds that cross on to him. One of Steves hunting buddys is a lawyer and has took the case and they go to court Jan. 10. Steve is seeking $2000 in damages and now this guy wrote him a letter offering $1500 to settle out of court and threatens to counter sue for pain and suffering, interfering with his land management (deer) and for not having his dogs on a leash. I read this letter and almost can't believe what I read. Steve didn't accept his offer. I will post what happen in court as soon as I find out.
I am not sure about now but in the past in Iowa if a hound trailed off onto private property, you were allowed to go get your hound without asking permission and the owner of the property could not go a thing about it unless the dog was destroying property. Everyone should try to get this law passed in your state.

Being in law enforcement and owning hounds I know that the sherriff is the idiot in this case. First of all a dog cannot trespass onto anything nor a person that cannot read. Second of all the shooter should have been arrested for felony animal negelect. We arrested a man in Indianapolis last week for letting his neighbors dogs starve and freeze to death while in care of the two dogs. It is sad that more law enforcement officals don't know or don't care about the welfare of animals. I also believe the dog owner could have got alot more than $2000 for the dogs. It is a sad world that we live in when someone shoots another mans dogs regardless of the reason.

similare story in VA
I deer hunt west of me, in a county called Buckinham VA. I normally still hunt from a stand on a private 60 acres. Deer dogs come through all the time. I have benefitted from this (of course), but understand how it would pee the land owners off. These lazy Buckinham hunters, don't even get out of their trucks. They use big hounds (Walkers, Redbones, Blueticks, English, etc....), track them with long range - vehicle mounted antennas and shoot from the truck. Most of them aren't even in camoflauge. This sort of unsportman & unethical hunting just turns my stomach.
Last year a landowner, shot a deer dog. It went to court and he lost. Lost big time in fact. He paid thousands in restitution and spent some time behind bars. Felony conviction to boot. Anyway, these hunters I'm referring to, purposely violate everyone's land, after years of that, I understand how a desperate land owner may resort to such extreme actions.
However, as hunter and pet owner, I think your case is different. I don't think it was intentional, nor do I condone shooting anyone's animals. For all landowners, who wish to keep their land private and dog free, fencing is a far better and LEGAL alternative. A short 4' fence won't even phase a deer, but will keep 95% of the dogs out.

Dogs don't have to look good to win tittles, but conformation "enhances their chances"!
