I do not believe all rabbits smell the same, diet, minerals in the ground, etc could cause different scents to individual rabbits. Yes I know e collars stop them from running trash, but I also know from training pups that they will learn your scent and track you vrs your buddy hanging around with you. A lot of what is being debated has to do with a dogs smarts or lack of.
True, that's part of it but the brain can only work with what the nose delivers. We are sweaty stinky people and even we can smell the difference in people. But, rabbits in the same area, eating the same grasses and bark of the same family, this is real distinction. Of course animals of other species I would expect them to have no problem discerning.
Now, to ignore all these other scents, and even the scent of the rabbit's brother and remain focused....How much of a change in chemistry would it take to confuse the hound?
I understand the difference in external environment has on scent, but the thing that baffles us, is the so common check, when we turn or frighten the rabbit seeing us. :?:
We say, he tightens up,... he craps himself,...the shock and rush of adrenalin changes scent,....This is what I'm focused on, what so often causes the check when you turn the rabbit?
I agree, when a shot is fired, it disturbs the ground and foils the scent line.

Many factors effect scent, the combination of all favoring factors in correct proportion makes hounds fly.
Your "wet" considers only one factor, moisture. Scent is reliant upon moisture, but like anything, to much can cause adverse effects, washout or saturation which causes the stoppage of evaporation to which scent is also reliant upon to be carried or lifted to the hounds nose.
A wet rabbit on a dry day can be an advantage,... a wet rabbit, when the air or atmosphere has reached a saturation point(will hold no more moisture), adds nothing(warm air hold more moisture than cold air).
So your "wet rabbit" effect is good for some days, negligible on others . imho

I do not see any differnce in a check that a rabbit puts on a dog even if the rabbit sees the hunter or not. A check is just the lost of the line or change in direction of the line at lost. If your theory is true hounds would not loose as many or less rabbits before they see a hunter or person. I have never seen a rabbit crap itself from seeing me I have seen radical movement and some indecession on a rabbits part to get out of the way sorta like people jump when someone jumps out behind a tree and hollers boo. If your theory was true does a rabbit change chemisty when a hawk flys over giving the fox less chance to get a meal.

Patch since I run water bunnies most of the time I can say a wet rabbit is a beautiful thing over a dry rabbit any day.

I am happy your "wet bunny" suits you best... Robin

Back to the check of the turned rabbit. These checks we see and know what happened to the rabbit and see the results when the hound comes to the spot, but what caused it? sometimes the rabbit does nothing fancy when it sees us but the spot where it seen us becomes a check most times.
The other tricks in the rabbit's bag work well also so us turning or spooking the rabbit is not the only thing to cause a check, doubles and side jumping still have their effectiveness, running cross foiled ground still gains him time.

The rabbit craping himself was a bit of a joke to expound the "cover-up" of scent...

I've never seen what happens if a rabbit sees a hawk while being perused by a fox but i'm sure it's happened,... oh the poor lowly rabbit... :ashamed:

I have seen rabbits run up on me and seen the hounds continue on with the track, I have rabbits come upon hunters and as soon as the rabbit disappears they start hollering here he is, there he goes, get him and all the other crazy stuff that come out of our mouths and the hounds get confused between what they were doing and what someone else wants them to do and that causes checks. but to be honest I guess I better sit down with sisaroo and hear her side on this scent thing I believe her she never lies.LOL May I us your line of cloaking in the future it sounds better than dammit dog.

I have rabbit hunted and ran rabbit dogs for the last 30 years. In that time I have hunted with lots of friends that had hounds and friends of theirs that own hounds and so on and so forth. I know I have hunted over hundreds of different dogs with every kind of blood line that I can imagine. It dont make me a expert by no means but I can say I have spent a lot of my life watching a hound run a rabbit. I aint never seen a dog that didnt have trouble at some point running a rabbit. It may be that we jumped one they couldnt run or somebody shot at one and they couldn't circle it no more after the shot but if you take a dog out enough there will be a time when you will see him fail to do his job. Sometime the rabbit wins.

Obviously, the rabbit saw you as no threat as he did the fox flying over head while being pursued by the hawk...

If Sisaroo is one of them hounds that never looses a rabbit or has a check, you should listen to her as she has it figured out...

As for the "cloaking" line, it has been past experience that you can use anything said online on a public board as your own...

Had a guy call me laughing about dogs not being able to run a rabbit after the rabbit farted, he thought it was funny. He wanted to know how something as small as a rabbit passing gas ( which I agree would have to be a small amount) could possibly cover the rabbits scent. I asked him if he ever tried to smell a fresh rabbit track, there is no detectable scent to the human nose. It doesn't have to cover much. Not only that once the gas is in the dogs nose it is going to take a few seconds to clear. ( it is a scientific fact that rabbits do pass gas and this gas is much stronger than their scent as humans can actually smell it.) He was doing more thinking than laughing when the call was over. Something to consider!

LOL One more excuse to add to the list, rabbit had been eating beans. I've noticed that dogs often have trouble running in a bean filed, now we know why.

Newt, not an excuse , it is a possible explanation to something that those of us not possessing super dogs know happens. We know it happens we see it happen we just would like to understand why it happens to our dogs , I understand we could just purchase some super dogs from some people who have them and be done with the whole matter. But that would still not answer the question of why our weak nosed dogs appear to have even weaker noses under these certain circumstances. I guess it is a curiousity thing, something that folks with Super hounds don't even know exists and therefore will probably not be able to offer any help with. If I ever get me any of those Super Hounds , I am going to freeze Brand a big ole S on their chests! I bet the ole boys who trial tremble when you fellas with these Super Hounds show up.

My friend, put me down for a male and female when you get them, but hold off on the branding cuz im sure those super hounds come with a cape attached to their back, and that will be enough to recognize their super hounds to me.
