RiverBottom, I believe I read on one or two of your previous posts about how you seemed to be fascinated with the irish and The English having, run to catch dogs on hare. Sure doesn't seem like much of a stretch to believe our hounds would catch Hare. Also, and I may be mistaken but I believe I have read where you said your hounds have caught rabbits as well as hare. You want to be careful or them ole' boys up North will start to thinking you are full of crap also!

Not sure if thats a shot at me or not, but if it is its unecessary as I have not always had hounds with the nose power that I have now...in fact I have had PLENTY of hounds that couldn't get it done in the weather my hounds now can. Unfortunately however I cannot allow hounds that can't hunt in powdery snow to stay here very long...its not productive and expensive to keep hounds that cannot hunt in snow. We get a LOT of powder, it only makes sense to cull until you get the ones that CAN...as for your snide PRIDE comment, you are quoting incorrectly, just FYI.

Bluegrass we have the same running conditions here i am in southeast wisconsin. I have pups that are just over a year old and they are catching on how to run in snow since this is there first season. They seem to have pretty good nose power and have really been running the snot out of the rabbits. Except we were out this last weekend and we couldn't keep a rabbit going, not very long runs. It was below zero when we started in the morning and everything is snow covered. I am very pleased with them so far. I was just wondering what bloodlines are you running??

Just got in from running some young dogs tonight in this week old dry powdery snow and it wasn't pretty.

I run two different lines right now, but will probably stick with just one once the other bitch gets too old to go...one line is Striker and the ones I plan on sticking with are my two bitches out of Shoreacres Shakers Dinah. One came from Dinah and Greenbay Shooter and the other one (the best one) comes from Dinah and Kings My Dear Watson, which is a littermate to Greenbay Shooter. All three have what I would consider superior noses, but my two Ranger Dan bitches hunt MUCH, MUCH harder than my Striker bitch does. All three though can get it done in really bad weather, the only stuff I have trouble with is in the dry part of summer when all those baby rabbits are out.Jakeboy wrote:Bluegrass we have the same running conditions here i am in southeast wisconsin. Maybe I am just getting into rabbits that don't want to hole up making the runs longer, but we haven't had any bad outings yet...hope things keep on this way, its been fun.

You probably have more snow on the ground than we do up here north of GR...looking at getting a couple more inches in the next few days though. Sitting on about 4 or 5 inches total right now.birmi1nr wrote:Just got in from running some young dogs tonight in this week old dry powdery snow and it wasn't pretty.

Hey Tony,
Bud's moving over to the west side when he retires next year, Travers city, his daughter lives there just a few blocks from the Collar Clinic. Good to hear your having some good runs.
Harner,
You should have a good time Friday, the snows suppose to be flying and the temps are gonna drop, should be feeding time. Good luck running and Merry Christmas all.

This is quite possibly the best thread I've read on this board. I'm reading (and learnin') alot of good stuff from folks that are forced to run in these type of conditions the whole season.
