Danny,
I heard that all of your dogs run cold tracks and are slow as hell. :D

My fun is over so here is my personal opinion:
Everyone has there own style of hound that they perfer. Run what you have and if you don't like them, don't feed them. I love a good combination in a pack. One hot, one big nose...i don't like cold nose dogs that back track and run 2 day old tracks.

MAN
THIS IS A GOOD POST I DIDN'T KNOW THERE WERE SO MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF BEAGLES..I KNOW IT TAKES A DOG WITH A GOOD NOSE TO RUN ON SNOW I HAVE NEVER RUN ON MORE THAN 6 OR 8 INCHES,WITH A FROST ON IT .I RUN MOSTLY OLD STRIP MINES STRAIGHT UP AND DOWN .ON THE DRY DUSTY DAY'S WIND BLOWING HARD, MAKES FOR SOME TOUGH RUNNING. MY HOUNDS ARE NORTHERN BREED .NORTHWAY SPUR ,DINGUS MACRAE,TAYLOR'S SOCK IT TO ME ,KINGWOODS-T-REX,,THEY HAVE 8 OR 10 CROSSES OF ANNA'S ANN,BLIZZARD ,CALL GIRL,ETC.BRED TO RUN ON SNOW BUT TRAINED ON SOD AND IN STEEP THICK COVER I'VE RAN FROM NORTH TO SOUTH AND THE HOUNDS DON'T SHAME ME TO BAD IN EITHER CONDITIONS. THE QUESTION IS CAN ALL OR MOST BLOOD LINES BE VERSITAL, ENOUGH, TO RUN FROM ONE END OF THE SPECTRUM TO THE OTHER..-----------AND YEA I KNOW MY TYPING SUCKS BUT
KEEP'EM RUNNING

sav if I was going to match wits with you I would check mine at the door, beside you are already confused about your pot lickers, All joking aside sav went back and did a little reading, you claim to be fairly new to beagling or as you said been back into for about six month, beagles seem to be a never ending learning experince, I learn something new every year, things have changed through the years from where rabbits are found, to the predators that pursue them, so to keep up, we all have to adapt from year to year, I hope you enjoy your hounds this season and as myself I hope we all learn and do things to better the breed. Hunt safe and within the law, most of all take a kid to the bushes and teach them the right way. Happy hunting all and a Merry Christmas.

If you cut out all of the bickering in this thread, it would only amount to one page.

Tom your not the only one who's learned those things. Hillbilly is right as well.

I think one thing people get screwed up is cold trailing is different from cold nosed, and both are different from big nosed.

Cold trailing= working and old scent line.

Cold nosed = a dog that opens on an old scent, before a rabbit or hare is moving.

Big nosed = a dog that has a better than aerage ability to scent, this is not related to it's mouth.

I personally like a dog that has a big nose that knows how to use its mouth. That means a dog that'll work a cold trail, without opening until the rabbit is running. These are harder to find than your average cold nosed dog. For those of you that question if a dog knows the rabbit is up or if the track is runnable, I think it comes from experience

Cold nosed is all about opinion, it's what you like. I don't like to sit on the tailgate and listen. I like to see whats going on, so if a dog is barking and doesn't produce anything soon, within a few min, I don't like it.

Eddy,
It is getting really old around here! All i have done for the last 4 to five months is work 6 to 7 days a week. I'm currently on 30 straight. I did manage to hunt half days during deer season, but I paid for it later....My dogs are so rusty i don't think they know what a rabbit is anymore. I can't wait to get out and see your new pup. I know you have some nice ones!!!!

I had Sport and Hanna out last weekend and they didn't look to good. That is a wake up call for me! They never circled one, jumped 3, and pounded them for about 15 min each. I seen all of them, but really wanted them to get on a nice long run.

HarlyPA, That is a great post that explains it all!
