Looks like there are a lot of rabbit biologists on here  No one studies rabbits or there would be a rabbits forever society  nobody knows for sure what a rabbit smells like except a beagle.... and none of mine are talking yet :???:

Technical point and possibly true. However, body scent in general is what I believe a dog pursues.
What produces this "body scent"?
A hound that will take advantage of body scent is a smart hound, but how many on here say their hounds run head up vers/ head down?
I've watched ole bucks groom themselves, rubbing their underjaw and neck on wood or stem seems to be a favourite maneuver. We all know skin needs oils to remain pliable, think what the lack of oils would result on the thin tinder skin of a rabbit. Body scent is the most fleeting scent, least long lasting. If a "lathered-up" rabbit/hare is most stinky, shouldn't there be the opposite percentages of successful kills made on rabbit/hare than what we experience, does the rabbit/hare save it's best trick for last if all else fails? I'd hate to admit my hounds loose their rabbit/hare at it's most aromatic runnable point in time, this doesn't make sense to me?

For those who hunt fair weather hare it would be easy to c why they say cottontails are harder. Go try runnin one when its ten below.wind frozen icy sandlike snow.that's hare country and a hair s time of year.no cottontail will be runnable in 20inches of snow either.
both can be a challange for my muts.
