What has worked for you guys in the past. I want to break this dog from trying to tear up the rabbits.

My only guess is TT. I want to lay him down every time he does it. is that a mistake?

i've asked him several times why can't you just bring it to me like leah. he just stares at me probably thinking whats this crazy guy saying?
Joey,
I had a dog that would grab every rabbit and try to eat it and one day I was hunting with one of my hunting buddies and when my dog grabbed his rabbit, he grabbed the dog by one ear and picked it up by the ear and twisted his ear and believe it or not after 2--3 times of this the dog would not grab a rabbit again. I don't know what this did to the dog or if it will work every time but he said an old hunter taught him that trick. Worth a try anyway.

Joey this may sound out of the way but its the same as food aggression, you are the leader of the pack, so get to the rabbit before the hounds get there put your foot on the rabbit and when your big hound tries to get the rabbit ( I know this sounds strange) pee on his head and back him down. This will let him know who's the boss. No beating or zap. Don't forget to lift one leg. It works with food issuses.

Not wanting to ruin Joey's post here but this friend of mine is about 5' 7" and weighs about 150 lbs. He has a bunch of brothers that are all well over 6 ' and weigh from 250 lbs. on up. I ask him why they were all so big and him so little. He said they all sucked momma and he had to suck daddy.

Guys I have laughed so hard I about bust a gut, guess we better get back to Joey. Joey I always use dead rabbit on the dogs and without realizing it I guess it works. You might have to take a while to train him but I'm sure he will learn. Sounds like you just have a young aggressive male that needs to be taught the rabbit is for you not him. I would sure rather have one that way than to have one that didn't have the fire in him. It is a problem you can solve with a little work.

Joey i feel your pain. A few years ago my kennel had some bad luck and I lost 3 of ny best hounds, one to wolves and 2 just freak accidents while runnin. I was so use to hunting with these hounds I always knew what to expect when we hit the woods. Then I had to start over it drove me crazy, but I managed to get through it. Had to cull real hard. Keep the chin up, things will get better.

JOEY,

We all feel your pain. I can attest to the "Yardstick" dog the one you compare all others to. BUT they are only human and it is hard on YOU and THEM to compare. I LEARNED the Hard way not to compare Dogs or women  I like most of us followed your Pistol and we ALL felt the pain as we have been there before. :
I can tell you that Puppies ( ANY DOG less that 2 years Old) can break your heart, :bash: I can't count the times that I have run them and was soooooooooooo proud that $$$$ could NOT BUY them and then the days that I wondered WHY I FEED THEM. :annoyed:

Please do not give up on them IF YOU see something you like :check: in them don't forget that each day they run, each and every rabbit is a new experience to them the 1st hot, dry, cold ,frost, rain, snow and 1st leaves falling and countless other 1ST is a learning experience. I am A FIRM BELIEVER that it takes a good 2-3 Gun seasons for them to"Understand all they KNOW about it" Running pens have helped BUT it still takes TRACKS,TRACKS AND MORE TRACKS to make them complete.

Joey,
If he is doing other things that you like don't get rid of him too fast. I have gotton rid of several young dogs in the past because I didn't have patience with them only to hunt with them a year or two later and find out how big a mistake I had made. I have even let a few go that ended up doing good in field trials and one even championed out.

Bobby Vest wrote:What I don't understand Joey is if you are gun hunting why aren't the rabbits far enough ahead of the dogs that you all can get to them before the dogs do after the shot. I have had several dogs that will retrieve but I have never had the other dogs to wait on them so they could retrieve.
