im not saying anything bad about the dog at all, i've never seen this dog run but i've herd nothing but good things about him. alls im saying is alot of people blow crap up on this board and everybody on here has a stud dog, and for as far as me saying he has been bred 500 times that is what somebody had said at south kentucys trial.

I didn't get to see Reggie run, but I know of several good judges that gave him places & wins; that's a rap.

Just wanted to give a BIG THANK-YOU to Greg Well's for his two posts as I think they offer some of the most insightfull and well thought out comments on this post.
Also thanks to Bobby Vest and 271 Rockridge for their most recent posts as I think these posts go a long ways towards helping give prospective breeders a more accurate picture of the hound and for those of us that truely want to improve our beagles that's the kind of info. that helps.
Years ago when I was into competition coonhound Nite Hunts I had a Grand Nite Champion male that was getting a lot of attention for breeding You would not believe the owners of females that would come to breed and had not seen him go in the woods and would not take the time to see him hunt and tree a coon. Most guys were breeding to him either on his pedigree,on his Champion title or on somebody else say so. The three worst reasons to breed to a dog.If you have a quality female then take the time to check out the male to the best of your ability before you breed if you expect to have superior pups.

Boys after reading next time i see all you legends thinking i may give you boys a big ...... ....But on a serious side of things, after my first midwest trial , I was hooked. It was just the way people represented themselves and the org.Often thought i wish i could of been there in the beginning just too see the Great ones. But i have seen some awfully good dogs over the last 5 years. And made some lifelong friends. The format is starting to draw new crowds and different lines now i just hope we dont forget the Bylaws of what made it.Run Too Catch.
Wells I am coming your way over the weekend with shorty and the kids to The Chicken Festival in London. I would assume you are probaly going to North, and you probaly need to. You got a nice Bitch and she will Finish. If ya aint call me and i will bring a dog and come to your pen. My last trial sorta dissapointed me i am trying to do something totally out of my belief and that is bring a derby and bang heads with you boys. I am liking what my dog is doing but apparently the judges are not .So thinking maybe set on him till the runoff.Basically i am coming just too see you legends and have a laugh away from work. If ya wanna hook tonight or tommorow let ,me know. 859-274-2555.
Roy ur a pretty good buckeye buddy and you are thought of highly by a few people i respect highly, Lewis Long being one of them. See ya soon fellas.

The only major change that I have seen in the last 20 years is the number of dogs that show up at the trials. In the early 90's it was common to see over 100 big males at any Midwest trial. Now 30 big males is a great turn out. JMO

yep I remember over 100 a couple times, I watched chimer, primetime, and badger go at it a few times....I think they all ran together, but anyways Ive watched a lot of dogs that has finished and went on to be good producers too. I think that "Reggie" is a lot better producer than he gets credit for. sometimes the breeder gives the dog a bad name by just breeding to anybody that shows up with a stud fee and a bitch in heat, I'm say that including myself as soon as reggie was finished I took an average old bitch to him and got just average old pups... but I believe Terry realizes that b/c here lately I've been seeing some real nice young dogs out of Reggie since Terry has owned him.

I know the great reproducers throw good ones even when they are bred to average bitches .Seeing is believing .It is hard to turn down that stud fee though when they are knocking at the door.

[quote="Bobby Vest"]The Reggie dog!!!!!!! ( What a topic ). I bet there has been more said and written about this hound than any other in history. I've probably given as much or more thought on this hound than the average person. I will give my take on Reggie for what it's worth. My opinion and $1.25 will get you a cup of coffee. Reggie was here in the county as a pup and was owned by Jessie Scrogham. I remember one day I think Reggie was about 8 or 9 mo. old at the time. Will Mason, Jessie and I got together at Jessie's place and ran some young hounds. Reggie was one of those young hounds that we ran. Jessie was wanting to sell him and I watched the pup run. I felt like he was running backwards, sideways, mouthy, about anything bad you can think of but he did have great hunt and mouth. Jessie traded him to John Way and I'm not sure how but Kevin Monroe found out about him but he bought him from John. I have never thought to ask Kevin what he saw in the dog when he watched him run but it had to be something I had missed. I wouldn't have taken him home if Jessie had give him to me and I think Kevin paid pretty good money for him at the time. I remember I thought Kevin was crazy at the time. ( Just goes to show how much I know about dogs ). I really believe the best day in Reggie's life was the day Kevin Monroe took him home.[quote='Bobby Vest"]
I think credit should be given where credit is due and i think as far as little pack goes Tony Upton should get a lot of credit.Tony was running reggie and packing him to the hunts and sold his half of reggie to kevin about a month before he won the world hunt.I believe tony judged him at the world hunt and him and kevin bought him together after the first round a year or 2 before he won it.Now for akc this is where kevin took over and finished him for his title so in my opinion both did an excellent job and Both deserve the credit as far as field trials go.

Goforth, you are right that is a big change, but back then you only had 5 or 6 clubs in the Mid-West & everyone could afford to go to them all; that's why the numbers were higher. It was a lot easier to get your points (sometimes one trial would get you nearly 100 points). Now there are 19 clubs I think & there's no way most guys can get to all of them; plus some clubs are having 2 licensed trials a year now. In my opinion it is still really tough to get a win because there are more hounds in a class that are capable of winning & instead of 60 to 90 points ,you're lucky to get 20 or 30. It is almost impossible now days to finish a hound with 3 wins unless they have a ton of other places (2nd thru 4th). It hard to really say for me if it was tougher then or now to finish a dog in the AKC Mid-West. I guess I'm not smart enough, but it takes a heck of a dog to win 5 or 6 trials & just barely get thier 120 points. I guess AKC was pretty smart when they included points & wins to become a FC. It was nice seeing you at the trial the other day. You Goforth men have always been good for that club. Later, Greg

Jimbo "legend in his own mind" Abshire, I guess you've paid your dues & are worthy to come & run with me. I may go to North Central, but not positive just yet. Marvin is taking Val whether I go or not. Marv is hard core; he likes to run dogs which is the first thing you need to really enjoy cause they won't learn anything in the kennel & he's not afraid to compete if he can get there. He's a good man; going to be around a long time I think. Anyway, if I don't go, I'll give you a call . I'm only 15 minutes from London. I guess we can just watch your male solo; if he can ha,ha, because our Showtime female, Dove, is in heat & we sure don't want none of that crappy Junie blood. I know, I'll keep the fire going while you help your dog keep the rabbit going. Man I'm ripping you; do you like it or is your face turning red. I'll let you know something soon, Later, Wells

Sorry Jimbo, I remember now the last time I let you run those Junie bred dogs in my pen, I lost a lot of rabbits that night. Why does that line have to try & catch the rabbit every time? I'll let you run your Prime Time stuff ; they just kinda play around and watch them hop away & then come right back to you for a doggie treat. I love the way my Prime Time dogs handle that way, You can't even keep your dogs with you; they try to jump rabbits on thier own. Heck, I like to jump a rabbit myself every so often. It's a thrill to see them jump up. You can still come up to the house & if possible take that red head home with you & never bring her back. She cleans & cooks once a month. Great lady! It's just a 15 minute drive.
No, man I'm going to the trial. We'll try to get together next week sometime. Later, Wells
