i agree with you. When i was there I asked what about checks? they said no points for checks I thought that was weird. But I went with the flow and its something different for a change. If their are any PKC trials if you area give it a try you may like it. Bring you a good jump dog that can straight drive a rabbit you'll do good. Also if you decide to let someone else handle your dog make sure that person knows that dog well. has to know its bark cause the handler calls the dog.

Joey, glad to hear you enjoyed yourself!

In a Hound and Hunter format, I don't feel there is a legitimate way to score checks. You know as well as I do, if a group of guys are hunting and the check becomes open after a silent period out of sight, the dog that barks first may not be the one that drives it out of the check area. The only way to score checks is to run over the top of the dogs and even then, you are only getting one man's opinion. PKC has to stay away from "one man's opinion" and everything that is scored needs to be scored in front of everybody.

We have talked about implementing checks from time to time but have not found a consistent and fair way to do so. If anybody has any ideas, I am all ears. We strive to keep this format cut and dry. When scoring lines, it isn't always hammer down running and the dog that simply keeps it going, staying on the line, is rewarded well for it.

Thanks,

So what is to keep me from saying my dog got the jump and not yours? Some dogs sound the same sometimes. What if the hard driving dog that you describe takes it away and goes with it , who calls that? Just trying to get a feel for this trialing game. Thanks Mitch

Mitch, some do sound the same but a good handler should be able to know the ins and outs of his dogs voice. I can think of one time out of about 50 (hunts that I have been on) where there has been any confusion like this and it happened to not effect the outcome of the cast.

The hard driving dog that pounds the line is the one that is going to come out on top when it comes to scoring speed and drives. Yes, there are times when a rough dog that comes and goes on the line will sweep in and score first, however, those kinds of dogs do not score and win consistently. The judge does score the lines, however, they must go over line specifications before the cast goes out. When I judge, I always involve the other handlers. I make sure all of them are there to see the line being scored and I generally have them call the order in which they saw it.

The clubs in my region have had probably 50 hunts in two years of running pkc. Not one single protest. The World hunt this year did not have one single protest. The World Hunt two years ago was out of control with protests, the rules were tweaked to take the grey area out and it really helped. We are currently revising rules again to tighten up some loose spots. However, there will be problems from time to time, you can count on that, it just seems things are going really good right now.

Thanks
