duke, i know what you mean. i have one hound that i consider my most valuable. he isnt the fastest out there BUT, he jumps quite a few rabbits, has hardly any faults and never and i mean never sits home. i have traveled thousands of miles to find a dog that is like him. i also have spents thosands of dollars buying hounds and i always end up using him to compare my new hound with. i would fill my kennel witha dozen of his clones if i could and never buy another dog. its just hard for me to wait on pups to turn out, out of him.
to answer the oringinal post; im lucky because i have 1 female that is my "speed/drive" dog. she will run a jumped rabbit to death. and on the flip side, i have a super little check dog who will find a rabbit and will get the check to keep it going on the tough days. they are both equally nice dogs, and they compliment each other well. i wouldnt leave to go hunting without either. this is a good topic but and i wouldnt want to have to choose one dog over the other.

In my mind and what I try to strive for and accomplish is just this... I want a nice pack of dogs that all compliment eachother equally well... I don't think you can pack up to many front runners because then they start racing for the front and creating checks... I like all dogs to have a lot of hunt and serach (jump dogs) one dog to be able to push the rabbit and the other two to three hounds to be line control check hounds.... It seems that if you look for a pack of three to four hounds that compliment eachother you get some good races for a pack.... We have started to take a little of the front of our pack and run a style that hunts hard, great line control, good noses and knows how to work a check inside out...blackdirt beagles wrote:to answer the oringinal post; im lucky because i have 1 female that is my "speed/drive" dog. she will run a jumped rabbit to death. and on the flip side, i have a super little check dog who will find a rabbit and will get the check to keep it going on the tough days. they are both equally nice dogs, and they compliment each other well. i wouldnt leave to go hunting without either. this is a good topic but and i wouldnt want to have to choose one dog over the other.

Thats a nice looking hound. Did you manage to place her at Westminster?Honey Pot Hounds wrote:My most valuable hound is my first showdog and foundation bitch "Honey."
She is a beautiful 14.5" dominant tri bitch and together we have shared so many "firsts."
She has a temperment of gold and she is an excellent freewhelper and mother to her pups. Her last time in the ring she showed beautifully for me on our first time ever showing at Westminster. Honey has done everything I have ever asked of her. If my house was burning and I could only grab one hound and run, she'd be the one.

smitty, that is exactly what we are doing now. i have had the best luck with putting ONE speed and drive hound up front. from then on we have our best jump dogs and our hounds that can really get down and figure out those nasty checks.they can run wherever. together they form a nice pack that can circle rabbits with as few checks as possible at good speed. every week i'm trying new dogs in and out out our pack and comparing the results. also we have started to keep closer tabs on what dogs are contributing and hurting the most. to everyone that responded please keep in mind that i'm interested in YOUR ideas to expand on my line on thinking while doing this.

Thankyou, but no. We are still "nobody's" at that level of the game
It was one of the best days of my life though. And so many breeders and friends told me that she could have, or should have, won for the bitches. The bitch that did win is a decent bitch but I wouldn't trade Beagles for the world and had her famous handler been on my bitch I have no doubt that my bitch would have won.
No biggie...we were winners that day, fancy awards or not

I myself am kind of a softy when it comes to this subject. My fav of all the hounds in our kennel is the one i love to hunt. She may not be the fastest or the loudest but when the day is done and she hobbles her little 13 inch frame back to me and looks up, man I tell ya..... She has been with us for 4 years now and will be here till she looks up at her true master. If you truely love to rabbit hun you know what I mean. If not, then laugh at me cause I am a big ol softy!
