Re: Trouble with the snow
Crank did "ok" today. Wasn't his usual running style, ran slower with some longer and more frequent checks, but he brought em around to me none the less.

We have more snow earlier than any time I can remember. Had some great running today. I guess the rabbits, dogs, and sorry handlers (me and the Old Man) are all getting used to it.

no trouble here killed 8 sat solo.if you aint got a snow hound you got no hound
Re: Trouble with the snow
We jumped over 10 and killed 4 Sunday. Running isn't the best here in IL but we could have shot almost every rabbit. Dogs did exactly what the needed to do. Goose won a trial Saturday on this ice snow mix. I enjoy a good snow run. Still always ready to go south and run some swampers!

Re: Trouble with the snow
snow conditions vary. as the guys from maine or wisconsin can tell you if the snow comes down cold and dry it can be tough running. get a warm day and they fly. its not your dogs, its the lack of moisture in the snow.
Re: Trouble with the snow
Thanks for the feed back, maybe need to leave the young dogs at home till the snow melts, the older ones could run it until all the younger ones would get down there an trample the trail. Some days are good running in the snow some are just horrible seems when it gets later in the day an the temperature rises it does get better, but maybe smaller packs is the way to go.

Re: Trouble with the snow
older snow will be harder to run on then fresh.fresh snow has more moisture in it.also check huimidity levels.high humidity= good running.

Its not that its to much snow its the the crusty icey stuff that is super sharp that I won't run in cause it will shred a dogs pads right off of them.Budd wrote:Great pictures Jim, brother Rick down in Indiana said they got 8 inch's and nobody will go run with him...to much snow

Re: Trouble with the snow
I love hunting in all types of conditions, year round, which one of them is in the snow. Be patient, with the dogs, all dogs are different in certain conditions. The weather plays a huge part in all types of hunting. The type of snow, how long its been on the ground, the air temp, barometric press. etc. I've ran great on powder when it was 10 deg, and crappy when it was 28 and sunny.. Still love being outside with the dogs and watching them gear down to run on snow, In central ohio the snow pack really varies from year to year, you'll have snow one day and mud the next. Really hard for dogs to acclimate to the conditions. Some dogs do better than others. Just get out and run as much as you can with the conditions that allow for. Good luck.

Re: Trouble with the snow
They told him TO MUCH SNOW.....LOL. My brother can't drive because of his vision so he usually rides with a few different guys around there and that's what they told him, his wife took him to the club the day they got the 8 inchs, and the day after. He is having fun. I'm sure there is a crust early in the morning but it must be softening up by mid day for you fellas?johns03272008 wrote:Its not that its to much snow its the the crusty icey stuff that is super sharp that I won't run in cause it will shred a dogs pads right off of them.Budd wrote:Great pictures Jim, brother Rick down in Indiana said they got 8 inch's and nobody will go run with him...to much snow

Its sharp all day cause it has been in the 20's so still staying sharp, I would love to get out and run in the snow because I believe a dog needs to be able to run in all conditions but I just don't want to risk hurting my dogs feet when I know I can prevent it for now. As soon as the ice goes away running will be back on.
Re: Trouble with the snow
John, wasn't there a Midwest trial held this last weekend close to you? Did they have it or call it off?

Re: Trouble with the snow
Was there dogs there that could run it Casey? That would have been a good one to attend if your were looking for nose in a Midwest style dog. Wished I could have been there to watch anyhow. Who placed?

I couldn't make it due to work, I heard they had a winner in each class... Lol
Seems like they haven't put results up yet.
