I had the same thing dogs neck swelled and underside of her jaw I couldn't find any wounds or punctures,I hadn't run her for about a week so i figured she must of jabbed herself on a piece of wire but I couldn't find anything in the kennel she could of hurt herself on.I held her down and opened her mouth and lifted her tounge there was a thorn sticking out.I pulled it and gave her a shot of penicillan the next day she was fine. Also I have had them swell up with a bad tooth. This is usually a trip to the vet to get it yanked. As long as they are eating and drinking they arn't as bad as they look .....

i just got back from the vet. he told me that if it was an infected gland that i would be off to the side? the big ball of liquid is dead center.

anyway he got a needle and he sucked out a big bunch of it. looked like bloody puss nasty looking. his temp went from 104 yesterday to 102 today. so we gave it 48hrs and I'm to report back to him. He said if anything that he'll knock him out, cut it open and flush it out. We'll see how it looks 48hrs from now and I"m going to continue monitor his temp along with giving him the amoxicillin.

thats where i"m at with my dog.

This is some weird stuff. I never seen it before in my life.

I had a similar problem with my coon hound last fall. He had a stick puncture a hole under his tungue and break off. I had though he got stung by a bee but it didnt go down and actually got bigger. The vet looked at it and didnt think anything was in it and gave me some antibiotics. More than a month went by and it still was there the swelling went down but still had a lump the size of a golf ball. It was contantly draining cause he kept scratching it. I kept it clean and noticed one day something sticking out of it and pulled 2 big pieces of a stick out.

this is after some of the meds kicked in and the swelling went down some

this is the piece of stick that was in there

I did not read through all of these posts, but I had a hound get a stick jammed down his throat. He really opened his mouth when he ran. Had it removed and he was fine. I had surgery done, but the surgery did not get all of the stick. I milked his neck for two weeks and found more stick than the surgery. But, the hound was fine after that. Good luck.

They will get them on top of there head alot also if you run around thorn trees. It is nasty when it pops but as long as they are on meds and you keep it clean then there shouldnt be any problems. I had a vet try talking me into cosmetic surgery for when the absess popped. He said it wouldn't look right when it healed over:roll: Well it healed over just fine and couldnt even tell anything was there. I only take dogs to the vet if its an emergency or if I need a restock of meds at my house so I can take care of the problem myself. Honestly I wouldnt trust any vet around here all they want is money.

Joey, I would check under your dogs tongue. Not saying somethine went through there but that is how the stick got in my dogs neck while running and ultimately ended up in him losing his tongue. Went in right under the tongue and broke off in his neck. The abcess got huuge and the infection worked the stick out after about 2 weeks. My vet did not want to cut him open. This is the hole in his neck after it came out and what the abcess looked like:

Also, Both of my males had huge abcesses this season, the one pictured above and the other one had one on top of his head right above his eye. He slammed a thorn into his melon. On both occasions my vet did not lance and after a week or 2 the dog had got it open on his own and then I helped them clean it out. On both occasions the vet also prescribed "Clindamyacin". He told me that is his preferred antibiotics for an abcess.

My vet has always given me clavamox, for puncture wounds and cuts. I also use amoxycillin or cephalexin, which are both broad spectrum antibiotics and control the fever with bufferin aspirin, NOT TYLENOL, must be buffered, so does not cause any intestinal or kidney issues. You can get amoxy and ceph online or go to local pet store and go into fish dept, they have these meds labeled for aquarium use, in either powder or pill .

Good Luck

well my dog duke looked a heck of alot better this morning. I guess the vet draining a big bunch of the fluid yesterday really helped. the big ball of puss really went down by a bunch. I'm crossing my fingers it doesn't return and goes down all the way. I didn't get a chance to get a good look in his mouth. I'm going to as I get home from work.

I have seen many animals at slaughter with abcesses and NO signs of a puncture wound. I have also found abcesses especially in hogs with a piece of fence wire in the middle of it and no sign of a puncture. I think that by the time it festers up the little entrance point is healed up and that is why the wound abcesses in lieu of the infection (pus) draining out. There is a distint difference in the feel of an abcess and a swollen gland or a tumor. Most generally if they are pliable, swollen knots they are abcesses but if there is a swollen area with a hard core in it like a marble or a walnut it is probably a lymphnode infected. In the head the parotid lymphnodes are the ones just under the left and right jaw bone so those would show a swelling on either side of the head and or neck. I mentioned mumps as those are the very glands that are swollen when we have them. I have even poked a lot of abcessed swollen areas to find pieces of straw in them.

Just an update. Lanced the ball today. Like yours Joeyman it was pretty nasty. Lot of dark blood and just a little puss. I milked that thing for about an hour, reducing it size by over half the size. I'm gonna need 3 men and a boy to hold her down to look under the tongue and throat, because she didn't like that just a little bit. She just sat there and let me massage her though. Gave her 150mgs of amoxicilin and a baby aspirin (she had a 103 temp) she ate and drank. Seems like all is well so far. I can't tell all you guys how much help you have been. Really appreciate it!!!! I feel like I ought to help Joeyman pay some of his Vet bill LOL !!
Thanks again...............Marty D

If the knot doesn't seem to continue to go down you may have to poke it to drain it again. Sometimes if there is something in it and it do0esn;t come out it will fester up again. The antibiotics should help keep the infection down though. These things are just like when people get a splinter or a thron broken off in us. We may not see a thing but our system starts to fight off the foreign object and it will fester up, fill up with pus and eventually pop open to drain and evict the splinter or thorn.

that temp is a little high. suppose to be around 101 according to my vet.

i tried looking under dukes tongue that didn't go so well...lol it was kinda hard. i didn't see anything really that reached out and grabbed my attention. Also my kennel flooring had two pools of nasty puss on it. So looks like more drained out on its own. he is looking good so far. Pretty much the entire ball is almost all gone. He's a happy camper doesn't even know anything is wrong with him. i have him on 1.5cc of amoxicilin twice a day per vets orders. Once in the morning once at night. I squirt it into his mouth. thick white liquid is what it is.

I also had mine on the amox as well. It looked just like all your pics. The vet actually had to knock him out to get under his tongue cause he wouldn't let them mess with it. Unfortunately for mine, the infection was in his tongue too and swelled up huge to the point drinking and eating wasn't possible. If you guys don't see any of that I'd say you'll be good with just antibiotics.
