I mean a dry nose to a beagle would seem to be as conductive as dry eyes to a grey hound. how do you keep the nose moistened as normal for use?

I'm not sure, that never really crossed my mind as to why the dogs nose was moist. He hasn't had a tongue for about 3 days now, his nose seems normal.

Seems like he is using it normally too, when he's out in the yard he sniffing everything in site, as usual.

Dogs do adapt relatively well after they find a routine to go by.I have beardogs and coondogs in Maine and one of my best blueticks lost a eye.Was real worried about him as well.He adapted to it just fine.Took first place wins in three differant night hunts after that.To watch him run you'd never know. Also seen a three legged dog run a track like he was tied to it.A tounge is a important part but not needed to survive or hunt. His voice might not be 100%,but it will suprise ya I'm sure how well he'll do.There are lots of products that will help with weight issues,Maybe a blender will help!Lots of bacon greese, and pasta too.Soft stuff that will slide down with ease is what I'd try.Bread soaked into his dogfood will pack the weight on with all the carbs. It's going to be trial and error for a bit but your determination shows me he'll do just fine.I'll talk with my vet and pick his brain for ya and see if he's ever delt with how to help.Keep'n my fingers crossed for ya!

Shane,

This is truly an amazing story! What is even more amazing, is how adaptive and resilient our four-legged friends can be. I am very impressed with the actions you have taken to help your dog! Your dog is not the only one with a big heart and great desire! I hope this story has a happy ending and you will be able to hunt over him once again.
Keep us updated on his recovery.

Thanks for the suggestions and help everyone, any other ones let me know. I think i'm going to fry up some deer burger and rice when I get home and mix that in good with his canned food, smash it all up and roll some deer burger science diet balls, lol. See how he handles going at those. Looks like all the fresh deer burger I just got might be going to him this winter.

Going bunny running tomorrow. He is not going to be happy he gets left behind, it'll be the first time in 2.5 yrs he gets left in the kennel.

Ok I know I could just tell you this tomorrow when we hunt but thought of it right now and figured I would post it....What's your thoughts on going straight raw meat diet on Mack?? take a pound or two of thawed out burger and roll it into balls...he should be able to slide that down the old hatch pretty easy...plus we could grab my old man's meat grinder and drop a doe just for mack to eat on for a year...just a thought..

Also I didn't want anyone to think we would be shooting a doe illegally...I have a doe tag that I would gladly shoot a deer for him....I'm guessing I owe him a little since he keeps pushing bunnies by me and I keep missing...

I had already thought about getting a doe for him. Mixed that burger and rice in with his food tonight. He really went to town on it. He's eating real good. He hasn't figured the water out yet. Once he gets that down he's pretty much home free. It's all I can do to keep him out of the brush when I let him out right now.

I shot some water in his throat tonight to get him more fluid. He'll get there, he's got this far.

I had a similar situation about four years ago. Dog ran a stick under tongue, and down throat. The stick was the same dia. as a pencil, and about 5 inches long. After we got the stick out the dog recovered rather fast, but his voice was never the same. I feed mine raw also, and one thing you can do is call the sheriffs office, and put your name down for road kill deer. Another thing venison is real lean so mixing lard, may help with the weight, and it will go down easy.

He's doing pretty good. Eating every time I set the food in front of him. He still has a big knot on his neck, it's gotten a little bigger the past few days. I'm hoping the antibiotics I'm giving him start to take care of it soon. It's where the stick appeared to stop down in his throat.

I had asked the vet about it and he said the infection just needs to work its way out so IDK. I might get him down there to have it looked at again, I don't want something dumb on my part taking him down after what he's been through. It doesn't seem to be bothering him and I guess as long as he's eating and active it might not be too much to worry about.

Been thinking about your dog often after the story.I've come across a gaget that might help with the water situation.Sounds funny because it's called "Lick it".It's a devise that hooks to the fauset and all the dog has to do it lick it and it will deliever water to thier mouth.Without a tounge maybe the lips will work as well.Maybe you can find out more about product online and pick one up in your area.Hope this helps and hope I've described it so you know what I'm talking about......Think it would work well for him.......

He seems to be doing really good. He still has a big abcess on his neck/throat that I am hoping breaks open and drains soon. I had him back down at the vet so they could check it out. They shaved it and just said, it'll open up and drain at some point, no need to worry. It's not affecting his eating so they weren't too concerned about it. Must be a piece of something still in there that is trying to work its way out.

Too be honest with you guys, I haven't even seen him try to drink yet. I have been giving him a few vials of water every once in a while but he doesn't seem to want it too much. The vet said he probably wouldn't go try to get too much water with the wet food giving him mostly what he needs. I have fed him some kibble, soak it in water for an hour and it gets real mushy and soft. He really goes at that so he's getting water from there too. He pees all over everything still, so he is getting water from somewhere. I have a big heated bowl filled to to the top daily in his kennel. He eats like a maniac still.

He only has a few days left on his pills. Twice now I have let him out of the kennel and he instantly took off for the brush. Jumped a rabbit in 30 seconds, so he answered my question as to whether he could bark. I had one heck of a time chasing him down while he was running. I just want him to finish up his meds and get that abcess taken care of before I cut him loose again. He is definitely ready to go though and can't figure out why I'm not taking him.

I got one of those little "water fall" bowls that cycles the water up and down. He went after it a few times, seems its easier for him to get the water falling, kind of like a water hose.

I knew and hunted with a Foxhound, who no tongue, Fact is I kept here for awhile. She hunted and gave tongue ok. She had learn to eat and pop her lower jaw to drink. But always looked nasty because could not clean herself.
