I don't jumpshoot like to let the rabbit circle at least once before taking a shot and if i'm running young dogs on there first hunt like for them to be rolling pretty good before i shoot always have had good luck not boogering a pup up if thet are strokin along ,if i rabbit hunt with a land owner or somebody not used to rabbit hunting try to always use bells on the dogs less chance of somebody making a mistake. I go on one hunt a year with some guys who have access to some nice property if the running is not great i let them jumpshoot a few because they dont own dogs they just want to shoot but they always ask if we are going to let the dogs circle or jumpshoot my reply is always the same lets let them run a couple and see how the runnin is.

I've got a little better question to go along with this one.

How many of you guys used to jump shoot?? When I very first got into beagles we used to kill every rabbit we could............on the circle, jump shootin, whatever. It didn't take me long to get to where I'd rather hear the dogs than squeeze the trigger. And don't get me wrong, I like fried rabbit as much as the next guy but it quickly became more about the dogs than the kill.

Rabbitearl's question just kinda got me to wondering if a few of you were like I was when I first started running dogs and chasing rabbits or if more of you grew up with people that already ran dogs and kinda "knew better" than to do a lot of jump shooting.

Hunted a few times with my grandpa with no dogs and not much game either! We have never jump shot rabbits off of somebody kickin them out. I have shot them after short chases and hard running. It is really a reward for the dogs, IMO, to pet them up good and let them see a dead rabbit. Imagine dating a girl and chasing her around and NEVER gettin
to kiss her! That wouldn't be real encouraging! LOL.

It depends, if I was hungry and going to eat the rabbit, I would kill it. Since I don't need them for food, I wouldn't have a gun with me. However, with Obamanomics, I may need the food soon. ???
