Re: Westminster Show
I was elated to see them take the hound group. No matter what you do with your hounds, I think you just have to root for the "underdog"!!

If you and your daughter read the articles I posted, your questions will be answered.ebag33 wrote:I wonder what kind of line Uno runs? Wonder if he even knows what to do in the field

"But don't expect Uno to get his paws dirty and act like a typical hunting beagle. He has no interest in chasing deer or rabbits. The only prey he's interested is his little yellow rubber ducky, his favorite toy. "He doesn't put his nose straight down and go to the woods," says Wilkerson. "He's a show dog. If you put him near the woods, he'd come right back to me as if to say, 'You want me to walk in there?' "

Re: Westminster Show
I watched the show lwast night and saw Uno win. WAY TO GO!!! I wondered last night if he was a 'Windkist. He just has that beautiful build. Read this morning that he doesn't hunt and doesn't do the woods. Hope he goes all the way. Ms, Leah, don't know you, but you go girl!! Its about time the real dogs win.

uno was not bred to be a trial hound or gundog, although the breed was meant for that, but, akc is so picky, one scratch on him,he would be worthless to them,so,he is a show dog,at least he is gettin it done big time i guess........
congras leah and uno, good luck in the next round.

Actually, I thought Danny did quite well with his choice of words (this time). Not trying to start anything here, just admiring Danny for artfully putting in his 2 cents.
Re: Westminster Show
It's nice to see "our" breed get the credit it's due, but I wonder what impact this will have on beagle sales? I'm sure everyone will want the "new" it dog if he does take best in show, and that's really too bad in my opinion.
I've had my fingers slapped too many times for participating in any conversation pertaining to the "show dog" merits vs the "gun dog" merits, so I'll just say I'm a hunter first

Re: Westminster Show
This really shouldn't have too great an impact on sales of this breed, if we don't let it. When Underdog came out, I got double the inquiries I usually do that time of year, but still screened my buyers the same & refused to sell a pup to someone who wanted a Beagle just because they're cute. lolsav wrote:It's nice to see "our" breed get the credit it's due, but I wonder what impact this will have on beagle sales? I agree the Beagle should be a hunting hound first and foremost, and that's what I breed for even with the inclusion of show lines. But we really are not in a position to look down on show breeders for not breeding in hunt, because they are still doing a great deal in regards to health testing, etc. that we, as field breeders are not doing. I'd like to see more of a balance in the "look" of show and field Beagles & hate they are still two seperate types, but we each improve the breed in our own way ...

Re: Westminster Show
Would it be possible to keep this a cheering-on thread for Windkist, Uno, Aaron, and company? I know many of you can't imagine the thought of owning a beagle that isn't bred to get in the briars, so perhaps a separate thread to discuss that would be in order, and keep this one free of debate.
(I betcha every last hunting person here roots for the Beagle come Westminster every year, and is disappointed when the award goes to an Afghan hound or some such.)
But for the record, Uno is at least double bred CH Shaw's Spirit of the Chase (through his sire CH Windkist A Walk in the Park, Parker) which is some really strong hunt-producing genes.
