i started when i was 6 squirrel hunting with my dad moved to rabbit hunting at 8 with a 410... started my son's at 8 an just this past sunday bought my 10 year old daughter her first 22 an the 410 will soon follow.. my wife fuss alittle but i want her to be able to feed her self an defend her self if ever something ever goes bad in the great country we live in... we never know an i wont be around for ever to take care of her but if i'm around another few year's i will be able to rest knowing my little girl will be able to defend herself an feed herself..an with all the going on in the world it's a great feeling... hope i did'nt step on any toes but i think we all need to teach our kid's how to be self reliant... look a person cant even run out of gas on side of road an make it a couple mile's to a station without something terrible happening....i live in the country an stillworry maybe to much.. so let's teach our kid's the way we were tought we turned out ok i guess ... an again thank's for ready an if i step on any toes ... I'M SORRY...
how young
I was 10 years old, I kept pestering my dad that I wanted a shotgun. He had a Belknapp 20 gauge that he let me shoot before he got me my first 410. I asked him how I should hold it and he said to just raise it and shoot. It jumped up and hit me right in the jaw, it smarted alot. He then said " now boy I will show you how to hold a gun", he did it that way so I would listen to what he was teaching me. Throughout life , when I mess up, I often remember that lesson my old man taught me that day, some people have got to learn the hard way, LOL. I love my dad for taking me hunting and fishing and teaching me those kind of lessons. Just some thoughts, Tom Clouse

you know all us country boys just seem to grow up faster than the city
boys when it came to hard work and hunting just because its a way of
life. our dads did it our grand dads did it and all before. i remember the
guys all getting up early readying there selves for the hunting day and
another thing that don't happen much these days the women folk would
already have breakfast on the table. the smell of coffee and bacon frying
would wake you even if you weren't going as was my case i was to little,
use to make me so mad i couldn't stand it. but learning to shot around eight and nine i was hunting solo by the time i was ten. hope who ever is trying to get out to the woods early listens to the saftey its more important then the kill. have fun and good luck.
