Houndog, you can do what you want to with your hounds, I would never presume to tell you or anyone else how to train their beagles...but in response to your question about taking a kid to play little league, would I just let them play without seeing a bat or ball before?? The answer is NO. That is what TeeBall, Coach Pitch, Machine Pitch and the Minors are for, to SLOWLY teach them what is needed to play ball. But in all honesty, your post DID say that you begin taking them out with your PACK when they are 8 weeks old. Having raised my fair share of beagles as well (no where near 40 years of it though ;) ), I think its safe to say that 8 week old beagles are not only out of place in the field with a pack, but would be a big distraction to themselves and the rest of the pack. Although, I suppose a seasoned pack of hounds would ignore pups and do their thing anyway. I don't even usually try to start a hound until about 6 or 7 months old anyway, preferring to let them be pups for a while before thrusting them into adulthood prematurely....but, its all JMHO :) Tony

IM LIKE YOU BLUEGRASS I DONT RUSH PUPS, AND HAVE ENOUGH DOGS NOT TO PUSH THEM I LET THEM LOOSE IN THE PEN BETWWEN 6 AND 8 MONTHS OLD SOMETIMES A LITTLE OLDER DEPENDING ON THE TIME OF YEAR AND THE WEATHER. I LIKE A PUP TO HAVE SUCCESS IN THE BEGINNING NOT PUT TO MUCH ON HIS PLATE. I DONT START RUNNING THEM WITH SEASONED HOUNDS TILL THEY HAVE BEEN RUNNING FOR ATLEAST 4 OR 5 MONTHS. DON'T THINK A PUP NEEDS THE PRESSURE OR LEARN AS MUCH TRIING TO KEEP WITH THE OLD HOUNDS I KNOW IDIVIDUALS ARE DIFFERNT IN ABILITY BUT DOESN'T HURT THEM JUST TO RUN WITH DOGS OF THERE OWN AGE AND ABILITY AND LEARN TO FIGURE IT OUT ON THERE OWN. i JUST KNOW STARTING THEM OLDER THEY SEEM TO FLIP THAT SWITCH QUICKER AND REALLY LOVE IT. JUST MY OPINION!!!!!!!

The reason for this post is b/c I just got a new pup, indian hills and he's 8 weeks old. He'll be about 5 mo. old at the start of the season, but depending on how he's doing, I might be able to run him for the last month or so. If he's anything like my gyp I mentioned earlier, he'll be up for it.

Not sure if this is going to work, but here's my 8 mo. old pup Diamond running a tame one at 11 weeks. Just so happened I snapped the pic when the rabbit jumped, I didn't drop it like the pic makes it look like :)

I like to start them as early as they will start. Some are ready at 3 mo. others are not ready until 8 or 9 mo.

As far as running them with mature dogs, time will tell also.

Follow the link below to see a video of my 12 week old pups doing a pretty good job behind a rabbit.

im kinda new to this but i have found that the younger you introduce them to the field the faster they get used to being there then when they're three or four mounths old and your really ready to start working with them they seam to me to be rewady to go
