all i have seen you describe is a proven gundog or running dog... nothing you have stated has anything to do about what kind of a sire a dog may be. what makes a dog a "proven sire" at 2 years old verses a same caliber dog of 10 months old? you seem to be describing running/field ability. some of the best field champs have never reproduced worth a crap. you become a "proven stud" by actually having litters and seeing how they turn out... not by being 2 years old and running a bunch of rabbits. yes you need to be a good field dog to be considered for breeding purposes but what certain people like in a dog, there are probably plenty who dislike the same thing... we all have slightly (or great) different perceptions of a great dog. got to breed to make yourself happy and not worry about the general public. now im wayyy to young to know about "walkie talkie" dogs, but seems to me they were what the public wanted way back when... good thing we had a few breeders who werent worried about following the publics opinion or we'd all have dogs that were slower than turtles.JIMMIE ABSHIRE wrote:Black dirt a proven sire to me is at very best 2 years old and i am still very hesitant to bred to it then .... Fur in mouth makes or breaks dogs to me not because of blood . But blood in mouth not blood in pedigree.

I don't want my post to go any way. I just want it to be informative
I asked certain questions to certain answers. I didn't want all of the opinions....
I think that's fair... Don't you? NOW you can give your opinion.

you stick to your guns and i'll do the same. nothing wrong with that. and i didnt breed to grizz. long story short... i got him from a buddy as a started dog. right now theres a bunch of guys waiting to breed to grizz cause at 12 years old... you never know when he wont a another day to run. i personally know a few of these guys who are in a mad rush to breed to him cause they may have waited too long. ask some of these guys if they wished they would of bred to him at a young age vs. possibly running out of time now.
anyhow... good luck with your dogs... never saw a "chester" dog run but have heard quite a few good things about them. but if chester is 2 now and everyone is seeing great results from his pups (which i dont doubt at all)... how young of a stud was he to have all these great dogs out of him and only be 2 years old?? and thats not a riddle just your exact words.

You know this topic is just killin me LOL.... I see where several of you post that you breed to what is in a pedigree allll the time..... You wouldn't breed to this dog or that dog because of it's pedigree now you get on the band wagon here and say just the opposite, why? Because the dog is just 8 months old??? Hmmm Maybe this is the last male out of this particular pair and there is a fear that the dog may not be able to be mated to this particular female, how ever the pedigree is backing up everything else you guys post on here the line is a consistant producer the pup has been line bred, you guys are crazy....
I think that the person owning the 8 month old male probably would have a mating issue either there wouldn't be live sperm which is the norm or the pup will be just to immature mentally to do the job. But on the off chance he does the deed and makes a pup, evidently this is what the fellow is wanting and has a plan for this particular breeding. Tell me how many of you check out your pedigree and see the breeding age of the dam or stud? Or even the breeding age of the grands... You probably be surprised that many of them were young pairs.
I agree that the dogs need to be mature, however it is the owner of the dogs business on when he is going to breed his dog. Just like so many of you decide to breed a 12 year old bitch thinking this might be her last litter. Many older dogs have pups that have health issues just like in humans, once they are of a certain age the eggs and sperm are more susceptable to genetic and embriotic disorders. Besides at 10, 11 or 12 year old dogs it takes a tole on the female.

well I don't have any degree in breeding beagles but I breed a 10 month old female about 4 years ago and I am happy with the results, I breed her because the male was old and I didn't want to chance waiting a year then about a year later a buddy breed a litter mate to the same male and she didn't take so I am happy I chose to go ahead with it.
I liked what I saw out of the female at the time she had a lot of rabbits put in front of her that season and she ended up turning out exactly how I thought she would.
now on the other hand I have a female almost 3 years old that I waited until she was 2 years old to breed her, she didn't take and about five months later she started bleeding and I thought she was coming in heat again but to make a long story short she has a uterus infection and that was in September and after a lot of money spent I still don't know if she has cleared up completely so if I knew then what I know now I would have breed her earlier, I'm not sure if it would have made a difference or not but every time I hear her jump and smoke a rabbit I almost get sick thinking of the time I have put in this dog and possibly not getting any pups out of her. I say do what you think you need to do and don't look back.
