scabby ears ?

Two of my hounds have them but not the rest. They're little nasty looking scabs on the inside and outside of the ears. Not down in the ear canal, just on the flaps. Anyone know the cause or treatment? I been squirting some ear solution (alcahol/vinegar/iodine) on them but it doesn't seem to be doing much. May be drying them up a little but been doing it everyday for over a week. Thanks for any info. CHH

scabies (mange) ivomec should clear it up if left untreated it will probably go away on its own,, may return though!!

i had 1 dog that had this about 2 years ago,,,,it was scabies,,his ears got kinda thick at the flap,,,,i just rubbed the scabs off where they were raw and mixed a bleach/water solution and rubbed it on with a rag,,mine went away,,,,,,,hasnt returned knock on wood,,,,,,but ivermect works best,,,,,,

If your dogs have been running in briars, which I assume they have been there is a fungus on the briars that causes this problem. When our dogs break out with this stuff I will rub down the ears and their under belly and chest for this is where we seem to get the problems at with Iodine from the local feed store and then put some neosporin or tripple antibiotic ointment found at any medicine isle.

Clears it right up.

I keep a bottle of iodine for just about every thing here and some neosporine or triple antibiotic. Those two things are worth their weight in gold. Helps heal up fast and is economical on the pocket book.

Sounds like fungus to me too. My dogs get it occasionally. Give the ears a really good wash after hunting. TC has good advice too. some seem to be more susceptible than others. Carolyn

Thanks for the coments. I'll keep after them with the solution I been using and rub the neosporin on it also. Hopefully that should do it.It doesn't seem to be causing the hounds any discomfort but it bothers the heck out of me. lol.. CHH

Iodine is on the list of chemicals that are very controlled and watched. It is an ingrediant that the Meth heads are using to cook Methamphetamine. It use to be easy to get here in Tennessee but the druggies are ruining everything. Hope you dont get busted with a big bottle of Iodine and some cold pills Pat, you will be charged with attempt to manufacture, lol. Tom

It's not illegal to have iodine, you just have to tell them what it is for and they document it on a record sheet just like when ya buy a gun

CH, did you get your dogs ears cleared up? mine has the same thing. wondering what you used.
