bones and ya hounds

well fellow houndsman
we did a charity bbq for a group of folks and had right at 400 lbs of boston butts well they was like 60 some odd bones in those
been giving to the dogs about 1 every day or every other day everything has been fine all eating good and happy happy joy joy
went to the lot today one of the biggest eaters there GRHBCH, LPRCH BOLDSTROKES REBEL wouldnt eat got him out he tried to poop and constantly trying to pee nothing coming out and nothing went in after 1 hour went to the emergency vet told them what was going on
well they took xrays there is bone all in his intestines and got him backed up and clogged they are giving him enimas and laxitives as we speak the doc seems real confident that he will be ok but she said that it might take a couple days to get it all out said she has seen this before and all was well in the other cases she has seen hope its the case here also
all the other dogs is doing fine as of a lil bit ago so no more BONES for them either
ive never heard or seen this problem before so if this helps anyone im so gratefull i know for sure that they will not be no more bones here for the hounds
vet did say that they will digest bone fragments but when they have them that close or get into a pile of them that there isnt enough acid in there stomach to digest them and it will clog them up and the only way to get it out then is to give them enimas and laxitives and sometimes spoon it out i know that sounds bad but that is what she said so just rem a bone is no good for ya hound as we found out

Dang Mark Sorry to hear ol Reb is all plugged Up!!!!! Hope everything Comes out ok!!!!!

We to have had this Problem With a Dog we have We were told that the knuckle Bones Were ok to feed to a dog Well we found out different All the others seem to have done ok But one of em got all plugged up also!! We gave him Some bread with Vasoline on it like you would a cat fer a Hairball and he passed a Big Ol Brick on the second Day So we dont give Bones no more either!!!!!

looks like the progress is going good just got off the phone with the doc and they said that they have gotton a good bit of it out with 4 enimas and 2 rounds of laxitives said he has a ways to go but all seems good at this point FINGERS CROSSED .

yes patch he was in the pen by hisself and thanks for the thoughts
talk to the doc this mourning they r making good progress good bit of it is out and they r still going to give eminas today along with laxitives
still has some in there so still got the fingers crossed

Everything in moderation I guess, we've always given the large beef bones to hounds to knaw on...makes nice white teeth...
A risk in everything I guess, we've even heard of hounds swallowing large rocks and getting themselves bound, can't see any flavour in that...

Hope everything passes quickly and your hound is back on solid grub soon...

I give my dogs bones sometimes but they are something other then rawhide or what u gave ur dogs. They take a while to chew and keep they teeth clean.

I had a similar experience, but it was with an exotic cat (Serval-african plains cat) instead of a dog. We fed them rats and this particular cat had problems digesting the hair and bone. We ended up having to take to the vet to get the same treatment. From that point on, we had to skin the rats for her. We couldn't de-bone them because the exotic cats needed the taurine that the bones contained, but we did supplement her with slab meat (only meat, no bones) so she would get enough protein, but didn't have excess bone to digest.

Try cow hooves for clean white teeth! They work great and don't cause the same problems as bones or raw hids because they are composed of keratin. The dogs love them as well!

well folks got the reb right here in the living room with me as we talk
vet said tto watch him for 24 48 and all should be fine got some pain meds and some other as well to administer got the xrays and seen all was cleared out but he will try to go to the potty for a day or so because there is so much gas in his system from all the enimas and liguids that it will make him feel like he will need to go so with that being said ill keep ya updated when he is fully recovered thanks for all the kind words folks sure did help out

The problem you have run into with your hound is overfeeding bone without enough meat. The bone is much harder to digest than meat or kibble so it will back up your dog, as you have found out. The ratio of meat to bone is suggested 50/50. I am feeding raw to my dogs and have learned that chicken backs are ok but chicken thighs are too much bone. It seems a small difference in my mind but not in my dog's stomach. You can feed the bones but limit to once a week, freeze the rest and give over a more extended time. Think of them as a treat and not a meal or way to get rid of excess food around the house.

I have heard of blockages from squeaky toys, tennis balls, rocks and all sorts of other mysterious things dogs seem to want to eat.

The loaf of bread with BUTTER has been suggested but only works if the dog is willing to eat. Sometimes when backed up, the appetite gets suppressed. The bread smooths out the passage of stomach contents.

Hope your dog is feeling better now! Nothing worse than being backed up!

Glad your dog is better. Sounds like a close call. Better keep on the TLC so he can go give those rabbits hell!!!!!
