Joy Dog Food

Post by Lynn Perkins »

I used to feed diamond till back last fall(dogs weight dropped off bad) different people had told me about alot of changes Joy had made to their dogfood, and some new types of feed they had out.

My question is has anyone tried joy dog feed since the changes and are you liking it?

I'm feeding special meal(meat based) this spring/summer and feed the new Hi-performance 24/20(meat based) fall/winter both have Omega 3 & 6.I've not tried it yet but seen were they have even changed their Maintnace formula. All i know i needed a feed and was suprised in the changes and how much better my hounds look and their endurance level back up.

I know Alan McIver from the club I belong to feeds Joy and only Joy. I haven't specifically talked to him about the food, but it must work for him as he has a bunch of dogs and does the trial circuit.

I remember when I was a Boy, Joy dog food came here. It was the best thing since peanut butter. Then a few years later a dog would eat it and crap pure hair. I havent tried it or heard about changes until now.
A fellow Beagler got me to try Sportmix. I really like the results.

Lynn, I spoke with Chip a few months back from Joy and he told me that the only that has changed is the location of it being made. Everything else is suppossed to be exactly the same.

If you wouldn't mind could you keep me posted on how things work out with it.

Thanks

I am thinking about giving the new formula Joy a try also.I believe the formula changed from corn being the number one ingredient to a meat meal being number one.I hope it works out as it's still reasonably priced.

I also feed diamond 24/20 and dogs started looking bad on it and not haveing as much fire to them, they sure slacked off on their food really bad. So I switched to Black Gold and love it dogs are doing excellent on it wish I would have made the switch a long time ago.

Joy is working for me!!! $13.99 and I feed 1 1/4 cup per day and my dogs look great and have plenty of energy.

I have fed Diamond and I would love to try Black Gold but there is not a dealer close to me. Right now I don't forsee myself switching anytime soon. The dealer is a local "cash only" carry-out and they always have a fresh shipment in stock. Joy is what everyone around my house uses also, they live and die Joy feed.....

They have made several changes, even in their maintanace.Meat based, omega's 3 & 6.They also make a proffesinal formula based on chicken and back last fall came out with a 24/20 meat based with a very good price for our area.i feel their feed is a lot better then years past.i wouldn't feed it a couple years back, made hounds look and act like crap.

Just to throw a wrench into the works, I feed my dogs raw chicken backs and raw veggies. I started three months ago or so. Can't believe how good the dogs look, how little waste there is, the shine on the coat, lack of hound smell.... Costs me about $0.65 cdn per day to feed two adult dogs. They eat once a day, one is 11 years, one 4 years. Never thought I'd see the day my hounds were happy eating once a day! Sometimes they get pollock- raw fish also beef heart, venison, lamb, turkey, whatever is available for cheap. One chicken back, 1/4 cup ground raw veggies (mixture), couple of supplements and that's it! No grain, no pork, no beef except heart.

I have heard alot about the BARF diet and am very skeptical about the choice of feeding raw meat (especially chicken) as dogs can get salmonella and pass it to you when you clean up after them. Also, with the chicken bones, you take the risk of internal injuries.
I know there is alot of positive benefits of the BARF diet(the veggies), but just think that anything in excess can be detrimental in the long run.
I feed sportmix (blue bag) also, and my dogs LOVE it. The kibble size is pretty small and there is less feces than with some of the other dog foods I have tried. I use an O3 and O6 supplement for all my dogs because none of the dog foods seem to have adequate levels to suit me.
The main thing to avoid in a dog food is high corn content. Dog food companies use corn as a cheap source of protein, which causes more feces because it contains more fiber and it is less digestable than meat.
Carolyn, I would be interested in finding out how your dogs are doing in the future if they remain on this diet. My college prof. would also be interested, as she is an animal nutritionist and this diet came up in my Animal Nutrition class.

I have to pipe in ... fed BARF according to Billinghurst/Schultze for 3 years.
What I go tout of it is that raw is a good supplement but a poor way to feed long term. I saw huge improvements in health the first year and then everything went to hell. What I've discovered since then is this.
The raw diet is very imbalanced regarding the calcium:phosphorous ratio. Its difficult to get just the proper amount, and some bones are very indigestable, poultry included. I have seen turkey legs fed to my 75lb dog come out in whole pieces. Speaking of chicken backs a breeder I know fed mainly these to her bitch in whelp & had an *overabundance* of calcium that caused eclampsia almost two weeks prior to due date. I have heard testimonials of singleton pups and pups born with brith defects, primarily heart defects when the dam was fed all raw.
Bacteria is an issue. If you serach the web you will find references to sample diets that were tested and contained a staggering amount of bacteria ... entirely more than a dog's tougher digestive system can handle. I have heard accounts of dogs acquiring clostridium from raw tripe and other diseases from chicken. On an internet nutrition board I lurk on, a regular poster had a dog die from a chicken (wing?). If you go to the Second Chance Ranch site, though she has been accused of forging testimonials, you will find that the Siberian owner that lost a dog to raw runs a reputable rescue. YOu can ask her of her experience ...
My own experiences were grim. I thought my oldest Beagle was doing well on raw, but began seizing soon afterwards. We identified pork as the trigger and cut this out, but towards the end of his time on the diet, any raw product was a potential trigger. He lost substance, which could have been calcium deficiency. I don;t know for sure but I do know that calcium deficiencies are a cause of siezures. Calcium overabundances can cause irreversible bone & joint problems as well.
This dog was going into grand mal seizures once or twice a month, occasionally more frequently. He will now only seize if I give him a RMB that has been frozen for less than a week or give him raw when he has not had his medication for a few days. RAW is the trigger. I don;t have to medicate him more than once a weel if he is on a cooked or commercial diet.
Back to the downsides that are swept under the carpet. I had another dog whose phosporous levels would fluctuate on raw. His teeth were horrendously filthy from the inside and only cleared up on a lower protein high quality diet. He also has not had a hot spot since switching off raw.
That 75lb Shepherd that passed pieces of turkey leg ... I got her about 20lbs underweight @ 6 months of age, and she did not have rickets when I acquired her. Subsequent weight loss forced me to hav eher re checked by the vet, who, feeling the telltale bumps on her ribs, diagnosed her with the first case of rickets he had ever seen. She was getting RMBs every day.
I could go on and on and on. But the last straw was when my best bitch choked on a pork bone and after exhibiting a great deal of fear/pain, collapsed in her own urine. If she had died, I would have murdered every **&$^ that told me raw bones were safe. My @$$ they are safe .... as safe as playing russian roulette.
