ever see this color?

Post by New York Hillbilly »

Hey Folks!

Tell me if you have ever seen beagles this color. I have a male and female that are from a coss between Rising Suns Yankee Blue x Perry's Chickadee China. Yank is a "blue" hound and Chickadee is a Blue Tick hound. If you notice these 2 pups are not what I have come to know as "blue" but actually a very pretty silver gray color. They have the markings of a blue tick hound but in a silver/white/blue tick. Just thought you might want to see them because they are the fist I have ever seen myself. This picture is of the female pup with one of my Rising Sun females.

years ago i had a litter of pups and 3 of them were mouse grey X white. and i mean grey like a walmart sweatshirt  . had 1 til it was a year old and it stayed like that. the female was out of rick macks line from IL and i cant recall the sire as i just had got the female in trade a week before she had pups and then resold her after they were weaned. a buddy still has the female but she was never bred again.

Rising Sun Pups

Post by beaglehandler »

Mike: Here is a picture of three pups from the same litter. The sire is Rising Sun Dictator (LamborhginixBlue Snooker). The dam is Rising Sun Red Tisch (RocketxRising Sun Mary). We had two this color and Paul took one and Matt took the other. You can see what color the other five pups in the litter were.

beaglehandler,
The pups in the picture are like my Mousie and Yankee (father of the two pups) they began life as a gray color but as they became adults were more of a grayish/tan. I will post picture of Yankee next to the pup tomorrow. There is a world of difference between the two colors and it shocks me still. They are absolutely pewter colored and with the heavy ticking are cool looking. I will try to show you the hounds side by side so you can see the difference. Not anything like Mousie, Yankee, Blue Granite (Paul would remember him) or Snooker. These are a totaly different color all together.

The grey color is actually called lilac in genetics. It is caused by the same color genes that give the Weimariner its coat color. AKC won't accept the Lilac/Tan/White as a color in Beagles so we just register them as Blue/Tn/Wh. The lilac is the dilute (blue) version of the chocolate while what we call blues is the dilute version of black.

Here is a picture of one of mine. He is gone now. His mother was also an AKC Showring Ch and the same color he is.

Grey beagles

Post by Jim Carman »

Brian, the blue color used to run in the Bramlett line. I still have one blue in my kennel. The color seems to have been crossed out at my place. I used to have them regularly in my litters, but I haven't had one in several years now.

I have a female that color. I registered her as a blue tri color. Here is a picture of the first litter I had. There were three in that litter. I kept a female, Windmill Acres Blue Streak.

Vickie,
Nice looking young girl. She is a blue and I believe your pups are also. The only other pictures of lilacs appears to possibly be the 2 light grey pups on beaglehandlers post and the picture of the 13 inch male I posted. At times it can be hard to tell until they get to be about 6 months old or so if they are going to be lilac or blues. The lilac is the dilution of the liver (chocolate) so the nose pigment will not be just a slate color but have a more purple look to it. (Combination of the eraser or liver color pigment with blue.) Gentically the blue will be
B?dd (one set of recessives) and the lilac will have 2 double recessives and is bbdd. Chocolates, livers also have one set of recessives, bbD?, and a beagle with a Black blanket will be B?,D? indicating it is not double recessive for liver or dilution. (The question mark indicates that the second gene may be either Dominant (uppercase) or recessive, and if recessive the hound would be called a carrier for either chocolate or dilution.) One gene comes from each of the parents. Thus if a black blanketed beagle sires or the dam has offspring with say a blue pup in the litter then we know that both sire and dam carry the recessive. Thus thier genotype would be B?Dd. If you get a chocolate (liver) in a litter then the black blanketed parents would be BbD?. If you get a lilac then both parents have to be BbDd, getting one gene from each parent to produce the lilac bbdd. All bi-color red/wh, tan/wh, lemon/wh beagles have the double recessive ee which does not allow the blanket or primary color to be expressed. So if we see a beagle that has one of the primary (lilac, blue, black, chocolate) colored blankets we also know it is E? or dominant for primary color expression although it could be a carrier Ee for the gene that does not allow expression and if two are bred together then they could produce pups that are bi-colored or ee.

Lefgren-Lane,
Now I'm really confused! What color do you think my pewter colored pups are? The sire is what we have always called blue, like his mother, sisters and brothers, but they much less gray than the pups. The male you show in the picture is spectacular in conformation, a true beauty. Some of mine have very similar conformation and have championed on the bench. The color of that hound however is to my eye as red as red can be. I have had several that color also, almost a burnt orange. As a matter of fact my stud dog that was the basis for my kennel was a dead ringer for the one you show, right down to the color. I have been figuring the color I have been told was "blue" was more of a lilac and was some sort of recessive trait of red or chocolate, and the gray /silver color a recessive trait of black. The reason for this is, these silver pups are marked exactly like the mother (she is a blue ticked beagle), but where she is black they are gray. It is all confusing to me and like I said it is the first I have seen it.
