Epilepsy in beagles

Post by pcable »

Anyone have dogs with epilepsy? Have you continued to hunt them or bred them? What bloodlines were they?
Reason for asking is I have a male that is showing signs and looking for any info I can get. Thanks Patrick

I have 2 males with epilepsy...

I have them medicated with phenobarbital and potassium bromide.

They hunt just fine. I would not breed them though.

What signs are your dog showing? Mine have seizures a few times a year....

You can't stop the spread because people won't listen. I told a fellow about a hound that had epilepsy in his pedigree, he said he knew it but that was three generations ago. Now another hound has moved into the area that also has this same hound in it's pedigree. I have not doubt this blood will get mixed together because they're of the same family and there's a good chance the epilepsy will surface again and people will blame it on the bloodline instead, not those who ignored the problem.
Telling the truth will get you alot of hate and make you alot of enemies, but what do I care if it saves someone trouble and helps the hounds that you love.
It has been in the patch bloodline and will again because those so admired chose to ignore the problem. The response you'll get is that your hateful, jealous and crazy. But it is people like you that down the road wondering where this comes from that bear the heartbreak. Those that know better will tell you, "I never saw it in any of my hounds", so it must be something that you did.
I don't know what bloodline you have but if you think I can help you just hollar.

If you go on the A.K.C. web site and look at the dogs a-z that they register ,after each breed they give you a little thumbnail sketch of each breed.Uses, history, charecteristics, etc. They also tell you of any health issues associated with that particular breed.Epilepsy is a known issue in beagles.
I had one that had seizures.Didn't really affect her as a hunting dog as she was a good one and made Rabbit Champion easily but I would have never bred her as there is genetic linkage to those problems.

With all due respect, why would you campaign one with known seizures to a champion class? It may never get bred but having a champion in the litter makes the brothers and sisters more desirable to some breeders and they also would carry the epilepsy tho they may not express it in themselves.

This is similar to the patch situation, one of the litter with seizures was sold and later bred and her daughter was campaigned to champion.

Just for your info.-------------- I didn't campaign the dog.I sold her to a friend of mine who had full knowledge of her condition, loved the dog and wanted her anyways. He killed probably a couple of hundred rabbits with her as he was a serious gun hunter.I think he put her in a couple of trials just to see how she stacked up and when she championed out very quickly he quit entering her.He never had really trialed before and I think he just wanted to say he had a champion.I didn't grill him on the why- for?????

For what it is worth I had a beagle that was having random seizures. Turns out it was his beef based dog food. switched to grain free chicken and vegetables and he never had another seizure.

Interesting, I had a dog was seizing once. An old bird dog. For some reason I switched his food to pro plan he never seized again. ‘My friend was breeding beagles as pets. A dog started seizing, she changed the dog to pro plan, it never seized again.
My buddy and I were running, his dog started swaying than seized. First words from my buds mouths were “every time I feed that cheap ol roy”!
He said the dog never seized on pro plan or eukanuba.
So I’m judging a trial and a dog seized. A vet was there, I asked him if food could possibly be a contributing factor after I relayed the information I just did. He said it sure sounded it but didn’t have medical proof.
Either way if you’re feeding junk try something dif. Good luck
