Bleeding Ears

Post by windy hollow »

On Friday, I was out soloing my hounds, and I had my best young male in the field, and he was on a rabbit about 75 yards out coming back at me, and I noticed blood sprayed on the snow when he came by me, and when I looked towards him, I saw it squirting off his head, now Im thinking this aint good, so I took off after him, and tried to catch him, and after many unsuccessful attempts I finally caught him and layed on him and tried to see where he was bleeding from I thought it had to be his jugular vein in his neck but even though his neck was drenched in blood it was'nt there. Finally I got to his right ear and blood just shot out of his ear, by now he is soaked Im soaked, and Im thinking theres no way he's gonna make it to the truck where I have a first aid kit. After getting the bleeding stopped three times and haveing him shake his head and getting it bleeding again. I got it stopped then layed his ear backwards over his head and took my hanky and wrapped it around his head like a babushka, and tied it under his chin and got him to the truck and to the vet where it took three stitches to make it stop bleeding. It seems there's a main artery that goes the whole way around the edge of the ear.
I've had beagles tear their ear to shreds and never bled like this.
He is doing well now, but the vet said he was close to going in shock.
