Snow Day success!

Had an inclement weather day today. (2nd one this year)
Took a 9 mo. old pup out I'm trying to start for a guy.
Oliver pup, been trying to get him interested for 10 wks!
The crust was melting so that the rabbits left tracks.
He ventured out and jumped a cottontail by himself.
To my amazement he opened with a beautiful squall mouth and ran the track!!
Sigh of relief...

Had his sister started in one week and running well after 4 wks.
Funny how littermates differ?

They sure don't all progress the same. Funny.....some understand that....others give up on that pup you just described.

I believe true houndsman give them ample time to learn.....others not so much. Lol.

I know my patience has grown much longer for the less progressive types. I have seen several top hounds not start super early and or not be stars at 8 months old. The continually grow and mature.

I fear quitting too soon on hounds nowadays. Within reason, I give them a real fair shot. That sometimes is longer than you would like but again patience comes into play.

I agree; that first time they open is awesome. A young couple's dog opened and tracked for the first time last week. He started packing with my dogs and may have jumped a rabbit of his own while the others were running a different rabbit. Prior to that we turned a wild rabbit loose for him to chase once. The dog needs to get out more. Maybe I should suggest they leave him for a week or two. I could run him every day.

Came back and he had jumped the fence. (he's a full 15" at 8mo.)
He got into my rabbit barn and tore into the cages and mauled the rabbits.
I'm glad he's interested in bunnies but dang!
I called his owner tonight. He's leaving tomorrow.

I'd say he's finding his own rabbit. Sorry about the rabbits. Definitely a story to tell with time.

Sounds like he thought if you quit to go eat lunch, he'd do the same.

I lost rabbits to the neighbors dog and know how pee'd you are.

I think it's good he's going home, you won't be able to keep him in the pen unsupervised now that he knows how to get out. He's had a taste, so now he should be able to earn his keep learning on the outside wild rabbits.
