Keeping only one beagle in a kennel

Post by LPFSTheFett »

I'm new to beagling and only have one dog, which is a 7 month old male. Is it a problem to only have the one dog? I feel bad with him being by himself all the time. I go out 2-3 times a day to let him out and run around the yard. However, he whines and howls a lot. (He's figured out the bark collar, howls loud enough to make the sound, but not loud enough to get zapped lol) Kennel is just a 8x4 on a concrete slap, with a dog house.

Thanks for any input.

Jason, beagles are pack animals therefore company makes them feel at ease. If you were to get another, I would bet your hound will be a lot happier!

I'm in the same boat with being in a neighborhood. I can only pull off the kennel I have because the house backs up to woods and nobody can see it. I kept him inside at first, but he just sheds too much and my wife and daughter have asthma and are alergic to the dander.

Maybe I'll see about expanding the kennel to add another dog, but they'd have to be in the same kennel. Then I'd worry about them fighting. Can't wait to move lol. Won't have to worry about any of this.

Thanks,
Jason

I prefer my dogs in separate kennels this way I know who’s getting what food and who’s stools look good or bad also don’t have to worry about if the females coming into heat or fighting over food. I have also found that the more you take them out of there kennel to run around the yard to play the more they make noise while in the kennel because they know the louder they get the more app you are to come and let them out. a kennel mate may help or just double the problem. you could try the noise activated water spryer that will spray when he barks. One thing I have found to help is giving them more room, get the underground wireless electric fence for him and he can roam as the would like around the designated area and times when you leave for work or whatever them put him in the kennel.

I have two in the house that I owned first and I have an 11 month old male that is in and out of the house in the day time and sleeps in a outside kennel every evening. I have no issues with it, but he is also out with the other dogs all day in an acre fenced area so I am sure that helps.

We have the invisible fence, but since we back up to woods he'll break it to chase anything on 4 legs. I had him free in the backyard for 4 months and no issues. Caught him playing with deer in the yard several times(he thought they were playing) and when they left he'd just go about his day. Then at 6 months old I started taking him out to run and get use to his nose. About a week later we are sitting out back with him and he saw a rabbit in the woods and was gone. Took forever to get him back lol. Plus raccoons were coming up to the hose and had him cornered on the deck a few times at night, trying to polish off his food bowl.

I would definitely say the more we go back there to spend time with him and let him run, the worse it gets. He always howls when we put him back in the cage. At least it's a low grade howl, that I'm sure the neighbors can't hear.

I'll have to just keep an eye on things and if it gets worse try that water devise. He hates water, so Im sure that would work. Have a link by chance?

It's sure been a learning experience keeping him outside lol.

Not sure what fence you have but I have the sportdog mine butts up against the woods also. I have never had them chase anything through it. I have had them chase rabbits and stop when they get to it. Great way to deer break them also. I have a bunch of deer in my yard every night. They get so used to seeing them and smelling them they never chase um.

Interesting.. I have the invisible fence brand, which was a big mistake. I never had them come out and just stuck one of our shih tzu's collars on him. Probably doesn't shock him enough. I called about getting his own collar and they wanted $500. I just couldn't do it out of principal. If you've had success with your's I'll give that another go as well. I can deal with him digging holes in the yard over howling lol.

Of course maybe I'll wait until after rut. We've had our fair share of monster bucks 175+ come through our back yard. I've always watched them pass as I want a little more sport then sitting on my deck, but can't let my 12 year old son have the biggest deer in the house for another year, it's all I hear lol.

The sportdog is the strongest of all the collars I have ever seen for an invisible fence I put mine in with four collars for not much more then they want for just one collar lol The best part is they come with 1000 ft of wire instead of the standard 500 ft from every other company. It was almost enough to do the acre I have fenced in. I would take a guess my sport dogs on 2 of the 5 is as strong as my Trashbreaker on 5 lol When my female gets shocked she will usually just lay down and act like she is dying. They all learned really really quick and none of them even think about testing it. I have a coyote hound on it also and she wont try it either. First few times she got shocked she wouldnt even leave the deck when I would let her out lol

I picked up the Petsafe Invisible fence and was easy to install, but I also didn't have to run the wire. Just unplugged the invisible fence brand and pluged in the Petsafe. Looking at the two units, you'd think they were made by the same people. I set the correction level to 2, to get him started on it . He broke it once and hasn't tried since. I'm working him into it so I can leave him out unattended. So I think that will do the trick.

What do you guys use for toys etc.. so they don't destroy stuff when they are out? He digs holes, chews up our patio furniture, even pulled the weather stripping out from the back door. lol

All hounds dig its almost impossible to break. They also eat about anything older they get theb better they get at not doing it.
